Herpes in 1 year old??

Question:
I'm terrified. My husband and I both have HSV-2 and have had for 6 years. It was never a big deal before we had kids because we were both infected. Now I'm constantly terrified that we're going to infect our daughter. I wash my hands after the bathroom and do what I can, and have hand sanitizer around the house (although I was better about using that when she was younger before we moved).

So, we were in the ER last night with her because she has a rash on her tummy and side. It's been minor for a few days, but flared up yesterday morning. She was at daycare all day then when she was dropped off at 5pm she felt warm, so I took her temperature. It was 100.5. Not bad, but enough for concern. By 7pm it was 101.6 and that was when I went to the ER. By 8pm it was 102.6. They diagnosed her with chicken pox (although she's not itching them, doesn't appear to be in any pain, and she had the vaccination 3 months ago). Here's where I freak out. I forgot to mention that I am having an outbreak right now. Whenever she gets diaper rash, I freak out, but this is the first time she's had a rash coincide with my breakout. They won't let me bring her into the clinic to get checked out because if it is chicken pox, she's contagious. I've looked all over the net to see if there are pictures of infants with herpes, and what it would look like on her tummy, or even what other reactions go along with it for infants.

She doesn't appear to be in pain, and I know my first outbreak was awful, so I'm hoping that is a good sign. How do I find out if this is something to be concerned about when the doctors won't allow me to bring her into the hospital? One of the pediatrician's was supposed to call me at home today, but didn't. So I'm going to try to call again tomorrow.

Also, if I get onto a suppressant, will that help reduce the risk to my daughter? I know how it affected me when my husband gave it to me (when we were engaged). I can't even imagine giving it to my little one.

Any advice would be very welcomed!

Answer:
when i was little i had chicken pox aswell, and it wasnt a terribly bad case (meaning not all over) so it infact might be chicken pox (but i also had a 2nd case when i was like in 5/6th grade so that might happen to her, or not)

if you really want, you can have her blood tested when this clears up and they let you back into the office, just voice your concerns about the timing of your outbreak, and her rash and they should put 2 and 2 together and take the test.

Thank you! The pictures look worse than she has. The first one looks kind of similar, but since it's not so clear of a picture that might be why.

I've been reading on this site that chicken pox is a form of herpes (how is it possible I didn't already put two and two together and figure that out?) So is it possible that I gave my daughter chicken pox?

I'm really confused and overwhelmed. The thought that I might have made her sick is horrible. I will definitely get that test done after she's allowed back to the clinic. Is there any risk to her if it is HSV not chicken pox and goes untreated?

Thank you for posting those sites. I appreciate it. I couldn't find anything like that. Thankfully, her "pox" aren't that bad. There's nothing pustule like about them. It just looks like lots of pimples and some are bigger and reder, but none have that shiny look to them.

Answer:
chicken pox is in the herpes family, but not the kind that will give you cold sores, or genital herpes. there are like 8 strands of the virus, and only 3 or so really affect us.(or that you hear about) # 3 is chicken pox/shingels

and you cant give your child chicken pox unless you have chicken pox. so you didnt give it to her. she could have caught it from any other child she came in contact with or was near.

risk, theres always a risk with children and hsv, but unless she gets worse thats when i would consider that it might be hsv.(then you just force your way into the office)

Answer:
What you just described does sound like typical chicken pox; try not to fret about something you don't know for sure yet, just keep an eye on her and get her in for a visit asap.

Answer:
Since she doesn't have the classic sores of chicken pox, how do I know when she isn't infectious any more? I was told the pox would burst and then scab over and then she could be in contact with other people, but these don't look like they have any puss or anything like that. It's just lots of little red bumps.

I agree with the muscling in approach except we are military so you can't get in without an appointment and they have us flagged as "infectious" because I already tried that.

Thank you for clarifying about how she could have got it. I am in "worrying" mode I think. I just don't want anything worse to happen if this is a misdiagnosis.

Answer:
That's my biggest nightmare. I have a 3 year old, and every bump she gets freaks me out (and i've only had this for a few months!). The picture of the newborn scares the crap out of me, cause i'm really hoping to have more kids. Then again, a lot of times you find worst case on the internet, and i'm gonna just hold onto that idea...

Answer:
How do you think you're going to pass genital herpes on to a one year old?

Transmission is through skin to skin contact.

Answer:
Keep in mind that generally, the younger you are when you get chicken pox the milder the sickness is. If she had the vaccination (which isn't 100% effective) AND she is so young, then chicken pox would hardly affect her at all. She may never get a sore or be itchy at all. Try to relax and realize that it's very hard to pass GH to a child, especially when you wash your hands well like you say you do. When I first got it my little girl had a red butt from getting sand in her diaper. I cried and cried thinking of the horrible pain that my baby was going to go through, then she bum looked fine the next day. Good luck!
