I wanted to warn people who apply various creams, ointments, and liquids to their lips and nether-regions to pay close attention to what you are applying to your genitals. Although what you are applying may be effective and safe, it breeds a familiarity and ease with applying stuff to the genitals- which could lead to an accident.

I for one woke up at 6am a couple nights ago and felt a little itchy. I am hyper-aware of every litle itch and usually treat with zicam to resolve it. I was really tired and went to the bathroom and saw a brown plastic bottle of what I thought was 3% hydrogen peroxide. I decided to saturate a cotton ball and apply it to my clitoris and for good measure- around my vagina- just to be extra prudent. :|

The problem was I was holding a brown plastic bottle of chemistry grade lactic acid, unneutralized, and 99% lactic acid! It was rated a hazard rating 3! I realized what I had done and jumped in the tub to rinse it. The superficial layers of my skin were rolling off but I forced myself to wash it and rinse it. It was of course very unpleasant. I totally do not reccomend it. lol The poision control center sent an ambulance and I ended up in a burn clinic for 2nd degree chemical burns. This was a couple nights ago and amazingly I look pretty normal now. I healed so quickly and now I am just red. I am so glad everything turned out ok. Now I am just staying in this weekend to relax, hence my computer usage on a Friday night! :o

Anyway, I wanted to warn people to always double-check what you are applying, even if you have done it a million times. I never had this sort of thing happen to me before and it made me realize how easy it is to mistake a bottle of something when you are tired and it is dark.

This experience also taught me that it is important to store dangerous chemicals appropriately and/or not have dangerous chemicals in the house at all.

Anon just to add a note of support. I am sorry that this happened to you - how truly frightening and I am glad there is no permanent damage.

I also made a mistake in the middle of the night, when very drowsy, and accidentally drank a big mouthful of liquid plant fertilizer. I'd put it into a disposable water bottle and mistook it for one filled with water. I immediately called poison control and they told me I'd be fine but it was scary as hell.

Always turn the light on and read the labels on stuff before you ingest it or apply it to your body.
