Liquorice Stops "Herpes" Cancer

A compound in liquorice may help to stop people with a herpes virus from developing cancer, research suggests. A team at New York University found the compound - glycyrrhizic acid - could stop the virus triggering a form of cancer called Kaposi sarcoma. The infection causes tumours to develop in tissues below the skin, and in internal organs. It is often found in people with a depressed immune system. The research is published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.

Answer:
I wasn't able to locate the ariticle on licorice. Do you know what the title of it is?

Answer:
Yes, please, the link to that article.

Karposi sarcoma is found in people who are SEVERELY immunosuppressed...like in AIDS patients, or people on immune suppressive medications after an organ transplant. Where is there any evidence that KS is linked to herpes (unless that person with herpes is severely immunosuppressed?) Personally, I'm betting that there isn't any evidence.

Michelle

Answer:
I think Kaposi' sarcoma is another herpes type virus. And my understanding is the same as your's that people with AIDS and little immune system develop it.

Answer:
Hi ;

Sorry I cant reach that artical as well.

Just had sent it like it was.

Answer:
Hi ;

I found another artical on same topic.

Licorice Licks Herpes Virus
Chemical within kills latently infected cells

A chemical in licorice kills cells latently infected with herpes virus, providing a target for developing drugs to eliminate the bug.

Viruses such as herpes can sit suppressed in cells in a so-called latent state in which they are difficult to treat.

Long used as an herbal remedy, licorice can reportedly fight infections, including herpes when applied topically.

Ornella Flore and colleagues from New York University School of Medicine have now shown that a chemical in licorice can inhibit the expression of latency genes in Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV).

KSHV is the virus associated with Kaposi's sarcoma, a condition characterized by tumors below the skin that's often found in people with immunodeficiencies.

Called glycyrrhizic acid, the chemical was found to induce cell death by altering levels of proteins involved in latency.

The find opens an avenue for developing novel herpes-fighting agents that might eradicate latent viral infections.

The research is reported in the Journal of Clinical Investigation.
