Birth control
Question: I was wondering if anyone knows if taking Valtrex reduces the effectiveness of birth control pills? I know that if you are taking antibiotics that the pill is not as effective, but I haven't been able to find any information about the affect of antivirals. The only thing my doctor mentioned was that a pregnancy would probably cause more outbreaks because of hormone changes. Any thoughts would be appreciated Answer: I would suggest that you need to contact a pharmacist to review the particular package insert for the product you are taking. Birth control Pills vary according to the ingredients in them. Answer: The effectiveness of birth control pills is reduced by antibiotics - since Valtrex is an antiviral, it doesn't affect the action of BCPs (I looked up the drug interactions online to make sure). You could call a pharmacy and ask a pharmacist to make extra sure. As far as hormonal influence...I think that's an individual thing. I had a girlfriend in high school who contracted herpes and she had a massive outbreak every month in accordance with her period. I've never had one related to the time of the month.
