Should I be on herpes medicine?
Question: Hiiiii, I'm 17, found out i have herpes like, 2 months ago. I took all the meds my doctor told me to take when I had an outbreak. Now that i've taken it all, should I get another prescription for daily meds? I got a bottle of Choraphor and it's just sitting there until I have my next OB (if I don't, that would be AWESOME.) I really don't like the idea of being completely devoted to medicine or something, (just in case I get immune to it in later years) Do you think this is a good option? So what I'm asking is, IF Choraphor works, is it healthy just to rely/live on on that? Thanks! Answer: Hiiiii, I'm 17, found out i have herpes like, 2 months ago. I took all the meds my doctor told me to take when I had an outbreak. What meds did your doctor put you on? Now that i've taken it all, should I get another prescription for daily meds? What herpes antivirals did your doctor put you on? I got a bottle of Choraphor and it's just sitting there until I have my next OB (if I don't, that would be AWESOME.) If you do decide to try Choraphor please let me know as I have developed a Choraphor Feedback page. Something to keep in mind about using Choraphor is that it might be more for helping to deal with the pain than for reducing outbreak frequency, asymptomatic shedding, and rate of transmission. I really don't like the idea of being completely devoted to medicine or something, (just in case I get immune to it in later years) Do you think this is a good option? Your immune system will not become immune to reliable herpes antivirals such as Valtrex, Famvir or Acyclovir -- if that is what you were referring to. So what I'm asking is, IF Choraphor works, is it healthy just to rely/live on on that? Thanks! Choraphor is different from the proven herpes antivirals. If you are looking for something to help you deal with the pain then you can try Choraphor (and I would love your feedback on your experiences with it). But if you are looking for something that will reduce asymptomatic shedding by about 95%, reduce frequency and intensity of flare ups, and reduce transmission by 50%, then I would most definitely stick with what has been proven in clinical trials first and foremost. Hope this helps, Angela :D Answer: When I left the clinic, i was given Metronidazole and a perscription for Acyclovir that i filled quickly after. There was no mention of another medicine after that, or If i was interested in being put on something. Nothing. So after I took those two medicines, I have nothing else to take. Hopefully Choraphor is being very truthful. I've read through every single testimonial they had and through their whole website. Took me about a week to actually decide to order it. I'm not really into being put on daily medcines. I do take Echinacea every chance I get. I'd rather take vitamins than medines. I have another question. Do you think Its wise to take daily medicine, or just other pills when my OB's come? Thanks so much for your help. If I do use my Choraphor, I will tell you how it goes! Answer: When I left the clinic, i was given Metronidazole Never heard of that before.. what is it? and a perscription for Acyclovir that i filled quickly after. Acyclovir is a very good herpes antiviral that has been proven in clinical trials that I have heard of before and it's been around for a long time. There was no mention of another medicine after that, or If i was interested in being put on something. Nothing. So after I took those two medicines, I have nothing else to take. Well, what happened with your outbreak after taking the Acyclovir? Do you not have any left? Hopefully Choraphor is being very truthful. I've read through every single testimonial they had and through their whole website. Took me about a week to actually decide to order it. I'm not really into being put on daily medcines. Well, if you do decide to try Choraphor I would love your feedback on it for my site. Just remember that Choraphor is not the same thing as Valtrex, Acyclovir, or Famvir. I do take Echinacea every chance I get. I'd rather take vitamins than medines. Why is that and have you consulted with your doctor to make sure that you are taking the right amounts of vitamins for your body? I have another question. Do you think Its wise to take daily medicine, or just other pills when my OB's come? Which meds are you referring to? I can only tell you about Famvir, Acyclovir or Valtrex (the proven herpes antivirals). Was on suppressive therapy with Valtrex for two years and it was the best thing I could do for my situation. You can read all about it over on my Herpes Biography I have had genital herpes for 10 years and was only on suppression for two years. But, they do say that outbreaks decrease over time anyway.. I will go back on suppressive therapy with Valtrex the last six weeks of my pregnancy so that I do not get any outbreaks during labor and delivery when it comes time to give birth. (Yes, I'm 5 months pregnant) Thanks so much for your help. If I do use my Choraphor, I will tell you how it goes! Your welcome ~ and thanks for helping me out with my feedback page! Angela :D Answer: Oh goodness, I wish you the best of luck with your baby, and I'm sure everything will go fine! I too, have no idea what the Metronidazole thing is. They handed it to me, and I had to take 1 pill twice daily for 7 days. So. I took it. haha. After taking Acyclovir 1 pill three times daily for 10 days, my outbreak gradually went away in their steps, and that was the last time. The first time I noticed the herpes was may26th. '05. And on top of all those pills I was taking together, I took my echinacea with them. I haven't consulted a doctor. I just do some research online and hope for the best. I know that's not the wisest thing to do, but I really hate doctors. I will go back there though.. And also, on the Choraphor website, it said if I was going to use their medicine, I should use any supressive medicine because something about making the virus present so choraphor can try to ''kill'' it , rather than having it supressed . I mean, It sounds good, but is that safe? Thanks again for all your information. It's nice to talk to someone and get some answers. :] Answer: Oh goodness, I wish you the best of luck with your baby, and I'm sure everything will go fine! Oh I'm sure everything will be GREAT. Thanks! :D I too, have no idea what the Metronidazole thing is. They handed it to me, and I had to take 1 pill twice daily for 7 days. So. I took it. haha. I've never heard of it being used to treat herpes. I did do a google search on it and this is what I came up with: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/d...r/a682244.html After taking Acyclovir 1 pill three times daily for 10 days, my outbreak gradually went away in their steps, and that was the last time. The first time I noticed the herpes was may26th. '05. And on top of all those pills I was taking together, I took my echinacea with them. Did you ask the pharmacist if it was ok to take echinacea along with your prescriptions? Did you ask your doctor about it? Just because it's "natural" doesn't mean it's "safer." ~ know what I mean? I haven't consulted a doctor. I just do some research online and hope for the best. I know that's not the wisest thing to do, but I really hate doctors. I will go back there though.. Why do you hate doctors so much? Not all doctors are bad. And also, on the Choraphor website, it said if I was going to use their medicine, I should use any supressive medicine because something about making the virus present so choraphor can try to ''kill'' it , rather than having it supressed . I mean, It sounds good, but is that safe? I'm not sure what you read on the Choraphor site but I have to tell you that Choraphor NOR WILL ANY OTHER MED or SUPPLEMENT *kill* the herpes virus. There is NO WAY to wipe out the virus completely from your body. If there were we would not all be talking about herpes in the first place.. ya know? Thanks again for all your information. It's nice to talk to someone and get some answers. :] Hey ~ you're welcome!! Best of luck to ya!! Angela :D Answer: You need to wait to see what your pattern of outbreaks are going to be before deciding to go on any daily suppression meds because you may not need it. If you only break out every year or 6 mos there is no reason to take a potentially harmfull pill everyday of your life. You may break out now..then again in a few mos..then it taper off as time goes. Let your immune system do its job if you can. I only breakout every couple of years, so there is no reason for me to take daily meds for suppression...you may have similar experience..you may not, only time will tell. I had that same question 5 years ago when I broke out for the first time and my docv told me to wait. I agree with Delilah that you may want to monitor the frequency of outbreaks and only treat them as they come before making the decision to try suppressive therapy. I actually did that the year before deciding to start Valtrex for suppressive therapy. I tracked them on paper and treated them only as they came up. After tracking them I decided an outbreak every two to three weeks was not something I was willing to put up with.. I was only on suppressive therapy for two years taking 500 mg daily. As far as my method being potentially harmful.. unless there are other things going on with a person's body that we don't know anything about I don't see how suppression with Valtrex could be potentially harmful. Also.. just because you give suppression a try doesn't mean you will have to stay on it for the rest of your life. I was only on it for two years and I have had genital herpes for 10 years. I don't get flare ups like I used to.. I might get one once or twice a year and sometimes none at all. So no, you won't have to stay on it for the rest of you life. You may break out now..then again in a few mos..then it taper off as time goes. Let your immune system do its job if you can. I only breakout every couple of years, so there is no reason for me to take daily meds for suppression... I would also like to point out that not everybody takes suppression for the same reason. There are some people that take it because the outbreaks are too much for them and then there are others that take it to greatly reduce a non-infected partner's chances of contracting herpes. That's basically what Don and I did in the beginning of our relationship. I stayed on suppression and we chose to use condoms in addition to that in order to *reduce* his chances of contracting genital herpes from me. So you see each person that chooses suppressive therapy has their own reasons for doing so and you don't have to be on it for life. you may have similar experience..you may not, only time will tell. I had that same question 5 years ago when I broke out for the first time and my docv told me to wait. It certainly never hurts to wait to see how things will turn out for you. You might not need suppressive therapy as Delilah pointed out. You may have to wait and see what works best for you and realize that everybody's situation is different.
