Answer:
No i meant stopping my cycles altogether by using BCP..my Ob's seem to occur with my period...and if its possible to stop my period by using BCP great! lol. You skip the placeabo pills and start your new pack instead. Voila, missed period!

Answer:
To cameogal,

There is natural stress associated with your body revving up to have a period. It may be that the stress of that cycle is enough to permit an easier path to an outbreak.

I absolutely adore my period and find it terribly affirming, sensual and even therapeutic. I?m usually at my highest stress level the day before my period. Once my period starts, the calm and focus and tranquility that come over me is amazing, and I am extremely productive immediately afterwards. And I know its hormonal. I?d just mention that periods are to be associated with health. They hold a lot of information (you may or may not care)?the color, the duration, the volume and the frequency are all indicia for females? health. For example, I can tell when my iron is low by the color. Another example, I moved across country starting a new job and had an early period for 15 days. ?YOU ARE VERY STRESSED? is what my body was telling me, and I was conscious that I really needed to eat on time and sleep, no matter how legitimately busy I was. So being observant about it is informative. When you don?t have a period (that too is information), you miss this information entirely.

A female doctor friend believes the saturation of the vaginal walls with downstreaming blood on a monthly basis is healthy. She thinks its beneficial for the reproductive tract.

Indirectly related---may or may not be of interest:
?Girls may begin to skip periods if they are not getting enough nutrition, or if there is too much stress on their body from sports. This stress lowers estrogen levels, which may cause skipped periods. Low estrogen levels and a lack of menstrual periods can lead to osteoporosis (weakened bones) and stress fractures (small cracks) in your bones.? http://www.youngwomenshealth.org/triad.html

You might want to go over all of this with your doc, ya know?

I just stumbled into this and couldn't resist---some commentary from women about whether they would stop their periods if possible, plus some notes on health risks too. I have included reactions mostly consistent with my own views (plus some humor)---there are many other views. Unless noted otherwise, below are all from this site: http://www.mum.org/ :

Pro period suppression:
  • "Worse still, all my friends synchronised to my cycle so we became very moody and hated each other for the same four days every month. Yes, I'd give it all up."
Anti period suppression:
  • ?No, I don't think I would get rid of my period, even if I could. .. I enjoy the cramps I get the same way I enjoy the muscle pains after a really good, beneficial workout. I don't know why, but I feel sexy when I'm menstruating. I realized at some point, in college, that that's when I was most likely to get dolled up and go to parties. I think I met several boyfriends while menstruating. From ovulation through menstruation, I'm most interested in sex, most emotional, and also most able to achieve sexual climax.?

"And the "feminine hygiene" industry is ran by men. I see more of a need for "masculine hygiene" products. The American culture is so wrapped up in their hassle-free existence that they feel menstruation is a disruption when in fact your car payment, your credit cards, and your stock portfolio are more of a disruption..."

"We send off pheromones and other signals that indicate a number of things regarding our sexual life and reproductive capabilities. Regular menstruation is a part of this."

"Many women speculated that a cessation of their periods would obliterate that annoying inconvenience of no sex for a whole week. However, without it, I felt that I had very little if any sexual desire whatsoever."
Health Risks/Benefits:
  • "I would never stop my periods again...I used to take DepoProvera and it screwed me all up....all of the extra estrogen and progesterone is stored in my fat cells - my body doesn't know what to do with it all. ..I have been off Depo for one year now and my periods are just starting to come back, but they are not normal - they last longer than they used to. I would never take this kind of birth control again. I have talked to many people who also take this and everyone I have talked to has gained 20 to 50 pounds! "

"I won't let my kids do birth control pills nor the Depo-Provera; I've seen too many friends that have been on both way too long and still trying to conceive 10 years later after stopping the BC pills and Depo - made them sterile."

Menstruation may offer health benefits: preventing heart disease through iron depletion:
"There have been a number of studies that suggest iron stores are closely linked to the incidence of (heart attack) and coronary artery disease?men who regularly donate blood have a lower risk of heart disease, and pre-menopausal women, who regularly lose blood, and thus iron, through menstruation, also have a lower risk of heart disease. .."Many scientists attribute the significantly low risk of cardiovascular disease among pre-menopausal women to the protective effects of estrogen,..but the hypothesis has been raised that the iron depletion associated with menstruation also protects against heart disease." http://archives.cnn.com/2000/HEALTH/...art.iron.reut/
