Question:
I have suffered from prety bad oral outbreaks for about 3 years. I have had enough, so I decided to order 30 Acyclovir 200 mg pills for $33 plus shipping. I plan on starting a supression therapy of taking 2 200mg pills twice a day, equaling 800mg total. That is pret expensive at that rate. I know I would of been better of purchasing the 90 Acyclovir 400mg pills for $59, but I didn't realy think about that.
My question is, would I be able to just order the 800mg tabs and cut them in half? Would that be ok? They offer 90 800mg tabs for $69 plus shipping, which seems like a hell of a deal if one could just cut them in half. What do you guys think? Thanks

that sounds like a fantastic idea :idea: when I order acyclovir, I order 800mg tabs, break them in half.. take one half tab twice a day. Very economical. :wink:

sad..for three years I've done this method. The tablets are oblong and pretty easy to break. Just take one tab, hold it in the center, and push one end down on a hard surface. It may a few times to get it just right.

Now one bit of caution: Acyclovir does not stay in the plasma for very long. you may find it more effective to take the 800 mg tablet you halved in the above exercise, get a pill splitter (the blade type), and split each 400mg half, in half again so you end up with four 200mg quarters.
Take one 200mg quarter, 4 times per day. Like every four hours while you are awake. Savvy? This dosage is also easier on your kidneys where acv is mainly excreted. Drink plenty of H2O.

I have genital type 2. Have had it for 23 years. I'm not using the med for supression b/c I don't experience frequent ob's. In the event of asymptomatic shedding, I'm using meds to reduce the chances of transmission to my non-h partner. B/f and I discussed options in the beginning of our relationship; he feels more comfortable with my being on drug therapy b/c he chooses not to wear condoms.

So far he hasn't shown symptoms. I haven't had an ob in 3+ years.
With that said, I used to go 4-5 years between ob's before I was on acv. My ex of 15 years never got the virus. (confirmed by a blood test) He too, never wore condoms. We simply abstained during ob or prodrome. Hubby would wash up really well immediately after a session.

Everyone's experience with this disease is unique. The secret is getting to know your own body's natural immune response to infection and your individual response to meds and supplements. Acv is supposed to be effective for 98% of people with HSV, however there are many variables to consider. Only time will tell if acv will work for you
