HELP....Please

Question:
My daughter who is 19contracted herpes when she was 6 mos preg, she had no sores and the baby i was deliverd normal. about 8 hours after realese from the hospital the baby was throwing up so she was taken to the dr. they found sores in her mouth so she was admited into the hospital and put on an iv. They took blood and all test were negative they then did a spinal tap and the wrong test was run so they did another and those tests came back negative they also did a culture that came back negative. they want to countinue to treat for herpes but the sores have not gone away and now they are saying the sores may just be something else he has been treated for 10 days now. if the tests are negative why would they countinue we can not get a straight answer from anyone

Answer:
wow. I am SO sorry the little fella is sick. Poor little darling! I don't know if it is herpes or not, seems like if they did a culture on the sores in his mouth THAT would show for sure whether or not he had herpes. So I am wondering if this is something else altogher.

I do not know much about spinals (oh my, I am in tears reading this, that this little guy had to deal with THAT at such a tender age...newborn!) but i dont' know if he would show the antibodies yet for herpes if he was newly infected. I don't know if a spinal is more accurate in testing. I am hoping someone here will PLEASE answer this post, maybe someone with more medical knowledge than I!!

I think herpes can be ruled out if they have done all this testing and it came back negative. Could it maybe be that hand/foot/mouth disease? have the sores in the mouth gone away? What are they giving this baby? Antivirals? (which, I can't understand....if herpes was ruled out, but maybe as an extra precaution?)

Please keep us posted how the baby is doing. I am sending my best wishes and prayers to your daughter and her child. I hope he is healthy very soon and can go home!!

Hugs to you and your family,
ouch.

Answer:
Also, does the child have a pediatrician already? (many times we pick one out before baby is born.) maybe get him/her involved, they might be more apt to disclosing information and possibilities. they are more experienced in infant/toddler illnesses too, as they SEE them more frequently.....if you do not have a pediatrician yet, get one asap...
