Aciclovir

Question:
I have just been diagnosed with herpes.I am from the UK I have been given Aciclovir so this drug may have a different name in a different country.

It feels like it's not working. I have to take 5 tablets daily for 5 days. I am three days in and its still so sore.

I am female. The sores are on the inside and it's just horrible.

Has anyone else tried this drug and what do other girls do to help ease the pain on the inside?

It's getting me down badly now.:(

Answer:
ladylit,

hang in there. although i am a male, i can tell you that what you are experiencing is probably as bad as it will ever get. the first outbreak is usually the worst as well as the longest. things should get better now. i have hsv1 (ie cold sores). my first outbreak was huge, not to mention very visual, embarrassing, and depressing. luckily, things have gotten much better since. i am now living in the uk and asked my gp to prescribe me daily doses of acyclovir for preventive treatment.

on a good note, acyclovir is covered by nhs. in other countries is not and can be quite expensive.

as i said, hang in there. things will get better. go through some of the posts on this forums for tips on how to ease the breakout that you are experiencing.

good luck.

THanks for your reply. I am feeling better but I had some sex over the weekend which seems to agrivated it a little and it feels a bit sore again.

On another note the anti virals are giving me REALLY bad dioreha (cant spell). Does anyone else get this? The stomach pains are shocking and I need to be near a toilet all the time.

Answer:
hmm... sorry to hear about your side effect. when i have outbreaks, the dose is 400mg three times a day, while for prevention i take it twice a day. so far, it has not given me any problem. i hope things get better for you. good luck.

I just got diagnosed on friday and started the acyclovir the same day, given, its only been a day but the pain has actually gotten worse. How long does this stuff take to work? I'm an active 20 year old female and I'm waddling around, emotional rollercoaster aside, I feel like a cripple. Is this stuff going to start working?

Answer:
HI Ladylid, I live in the U.S. and I was definitely diagnosed last Friday with H, and was started on acyclovir twice a day for suppresion and two pills twice a day for outbreaks, since I have started on A I have had only mild side effects so far, sometimes a short lived stomach ache and I now have a B.M. everyday but no real bad side effects, I think it's different for each person. I think you should consult your physician and tell them about the effects your having and see what they say, maybe they can switch you to something else with less effects. Good-Luck! Hope All Goes Well!!!!

Answer:
How long it takes to feel a reduction in symptoms really varies, mostly because how bad the first outbreak also varies so much. Also, getting diagnosed later into the outbreak can also mean the symptoms are prolonged because the virus has had more time to wreak havoc with your body before you've put a damper on things.

Everyone is different, but for me, it took about 3 days before I could really tell some improvement from all the pain...

Am also from the UK, got prescribed Aciclovir too. I'm five days in and although it seems to have got rid of the general flu symptoms Everything else seems worse than ever. My legs ache like mad and although some of the blisters seem to be a bit better I seem to be getting more in different places... feeling very panicky that although I'm washing my hands continuously that I'm somehow spreading it all over my body. feeling very lonely and just with I had someone to talk to. Unfortuntely I'm living in a new town, my mum whos been wonderfull unfortunately lives abroad and I don't have any close friends nearby. just want to sit and have a cup of tea and moan with someone:( Feel also very much like a cripple. I've been told to continue meds or 7days so hoping things will get better soon. In agony.

Answer:
your first outbreak is normally the worst - ive had it since 2005 and the first ob was awful - now i get maybe 2 - 3 a year and they are barely noticible.

i dont take any drugs - due to the fact i dont like taking pilss daily - probs do more worse then good in the long run.

luckily in england we do get drugs free - however in other countries spesh america they pay alot for the same drugs.
