Can the body build up a tolerance to Acyclovir?

Question:
I get outbreaks on the scrotum every 2 or 3 months. I guess it's type 2 but I haven't been tested so I'm not sure. The outbreaks are bothersome but not particularly painful or traumatic.

Taking Acyclovir seems to help clear the outbreaks up but I am wondering if it would be better to not take the Acyclovir and to "tough it out", hopefully so my body becomes stronger at dealing with herpes in the future and the outbreaks become fewer/shorter/weaker.

Good strategy? Or will taking the Acyclovir during the outbreaks have no effect on future outbreaks?

thanks!

Answer:
That's not how acyclovir, or the other antivirals work. They provide a compound that blocks the herpes DNA replication process. Simple as that, but worth a Nobel prize to the lady who invented it. I see people on other discussion forums who have used antivirals suppressively for years without problems. Generic acyclovir is very inexpensive.
