Doctor would not prescribe Valtrax until...

Question:
Ok here is my story and question all in one...

Primary infection 5 years ago. Diagnosed positive, but it was SOOO long I started to believe it was a mis-diagnosis (really!!!).

I was horrified, read all about it, learned about L-Lysine (stopped drinking red wine and eating popcorn and oranges ) etc...

I did notice a sharp tingling pre my second symptomatic stage, I am living through it now - gaaawwd it sucks so BAD!!!! I SOO wish I remembered that I should have gotten Valtrax right away and creme... I didnt.

Couple days after felt the start of a pimple. It wasnt a pimple it was pre-domal.

Went to the doctor in Canada (Toronto) and he said Valtrax is NOT recommended at this stage, (won't help)... Wanted to give me only the creme, spent a lot of time to tell me I shouldnt take it.

Anyways, if he said if I really wanted it he would prescribe it.

Question: Is this common... Do doctors routinely not prescribe Valtrax after symptoms??

Thanks in advance for all responses.

Answer:
I am in the US and my health provider will prescribe generic Acyclovir but not Valtrex. I asked about this and they don't have a contract with the manufacturer of Valtrex and it is very expensive. I can get the Acyclovir for $5. for a 3 months supply or I can pay out of pocket for the Valtrex.

I'm guessing that they may not want to cover the RX for you. I find it to be a life saver. I'd ask for the RX if they will let you and also for a refill. Take it to get over this ob and then have some on hand for future.

Oh and I've had this for many years so my RX was not for an initial ob it is for Suppressive Therapy.
