acyclovir?
Question: I get acyclovir prescribed to me... I know it's a zovirax supplement, but is it as good? Or just a cheap knock off? Anyone know what I should take? I don't have many outbreaks, and when I do it usually has something to do with starting my period, and I only get 1 bump, so what should I be taking? Thanks for any advice... Answer: hey ho! acyclovir is the generic version - it's just as good and probably much cheaper. i've been on the stuff (twice a day) for about a year now and have had maybe three outbreaks in the course of it. they're usually very weak outbreaks, too. (maybe three days and then everything heals up nicely) and just for information sake, let me tell you that you can buy the stuff pretty cheaply in Mexico without a prescription. i went down to Cuidad Juarez in September and once you cross the border, there's about a million little pharmacies. you can get a sealed bottle of about thirty pills (200 mg) for $22. i have heard all the stories about counterfeit drugs, so i asked my pharmacist (whom i trust implicitly) what his thoughts were on buying acyclovir "south of the border". his reply was something like "acyclovir is so cheap, that it isn't worth all the trouble of counterfeiting them - kind of like a counterfeitor wouldn't bother making up fake one dollar bills (or loonies, if you're canadian) because it just isn't worth the effort." taking two pills a day is a drag, no doubt, but it beats the hell out of the evil outbreaks i used to have.
