need some help from the educated ones please!!

Question:
What's the general opinion on shedding? I have seen some research on this but it's hard to find specifics. Do you shed from where you've previously had outbreaks? I have had this for at least 8 months and I have never had an OB. I have had unprotected sex with at least 4 people carrying it (before I knew). I have never given it to anyone. It's almost like it's not even real for me. Can you still shed active virus without ever having even one OB? Please if anyone has been in a situation where they have caught this from someone who has never had symptoms I would be so interested to know!! Or if anyone has it but has never had an OB and spread it to someone else.

Thanks for any input!

Answer:
shedding, is most active right before, during, and after a outbreak.
its also a daily thing~ think of dead skin, you cant see it but it happens on the molecular level.
so any given day you could shed the virus, and possibly infect someone else.

you shed in the area you have the virus, if you have it genital> your genital area is at risk for shedding, not just 1 tiny spot, you entire genital area, including your ass.

if you have it oraly, that means, your lips, inside your mouth, saliva, are all areas that are at risk for shedding, so kissing, sharing drinks, etc are all risky.

how do you know you have never given it to anyone? its possible that since your not having outbreaks, that whoever you give it to might also not have outbreaks.

Answer:
its also a daily thing - thats not what i was told..

i was told by a doctor you shed 5% of the year without supressive meds

and about 2% of the year when on supressive meds.

those statistics are for when your not having an outbreak

Answer:
according to the peoples doctors on this site- doctors are the cause of lots of mis information.

""The herpes virus can become active without causing symptoms. During these times, small amounts of the virus are present on the skin, often at the place of first infection. This reactivation without symptoms, known as "asymptomatic shedding," may also occur in rectal tissue or in fluids from the penis and vagina.

"Even if you're asymptomatic, you can transmit the virus," says Stanka Kukich, M.D., a medical team leader in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. In fact, studies have shown that most people get HSV from sexual contact during times of asymptomatic viral shedding.

Researchers have found that people with HSV-2 genital herpes tend to have more shedding than those with HSV-1. In addition, people with new infections are more likely to shed the virus than those with an infection more than a year old. Those with frequent recurrences may also shed the virus more often, but this is still an area being studied. ""

you have to ask yourself> if 70% of new herpes cases are due to having sex with someone, that "didnt" have herpes... how did they get it then - if there were no obvious signs.... shedding

Answer:
people lie.

simple - "my partner says they have never had an outbreak. well they aint gonna turn round and say, well actually ive had a few but didnt tell you"

also - you may have sex with somebody a 100 times before its caught...

shedding cant been seen or tested for. so how do you know your right and im wrong~?

New data show that suppressive use of antiviral medication - taken continuously twice a day - may reduce the risk of asymptomatic shedding by about 80 percent. Even though asymptomatic shedding occurs less than 5 percent of the time, a person with herpes who is partnered with someone who does not have herpes can take one additional and very effective step toward reducing the risk of transmission: safer sex practices.

Answer:
You know, all this shedding research is fairly new. I know people who have had this for a lot of years and they say when they caught it years ago, medical professionals (drs, nurses) told them that they were only contagious when having an outbreak. Furthmore, they told them they were only contagious when they had a blister that had opened up, exposing the viral fluid underneath. Maybe I am wrong but I think it is possible that they are shoving out all this stuff about shedding in order to make people think that we have to be on daily suppressive drugs for all this. If that's the case they are doing a fine job keeping people terrified of this STD and keeping people running for the pills. Keep in mind that it happens all the time for drugs....some medical professional will put out a study to support claims and promote the drug. They may even stretch the truth. Just a thought, and one that I don't think is that outrageous.

Answer:
Wish it was only scare tactics, but i am living proof that my husband had no coldsores present at the time of oral sex,I am now the unproud owner of genital herpes!!!

Answer:
uk girl - oral herpes can be mistaken for spots, cuts and dry and chapped lips..

chapped lips can very well be herps.

you may of even had it for years until your first OB.

Answer:
indeed, some people do lie> but some people dont.
and those are the cases that cause people to believe that shedding still does occur.
your absolutly right, people might have sex 100 times before getting it> but they still got it.
w/ the yoshi site, you just confirmed what i was telling you.

and please do provide the source of where you got this 5% of the time info- i was unable to find it.
