there are two types (strands) of herpes simplex virus (hsv) and they are called hsv 1 and hsv 2. (how come this begins to sound like some weird Dr. Seuss book?) they do not change their names because of their location and they can cause herpes viral infections anywhere on the human body. The most common locations have mucous membranes such as the mouth or the genitals.

most people who have coldsores have the strand that is called hsv 1. The only way to know for sure which strand causes your coldsores is to be tested. it is entirely possible to have hsv 2 as an oral infection but this is less common.

If you transfer it to yourself anywhere on your body it will still be hsv 1 (if that is the one you have.)
