Oral sex and Valtrex...
Question: I have recently entered a relationship with a person who does have herpes 2. We both have HSV2 on the genitals. Anyway, we are both on daily Valtrex as well. She recently gave me oral sex (no condom) and it freaked me out. Considering, I wouldn't even do that to her even knowing she was on valtrex. She's had if or like 4 years and me 4 months. As long as we are both outbreak free, and are on valtrex...my understanding is we are relativly safe from passing it on to our mouths this way. I mean, I'm worried about her and me as well. I would like to return the favor to her, but I'm really scared. Should I or we be worried? Or is it just a question of we both have to know when an outbreak, if any, will be coming and use caution? What is your experience in this? Thanks, Josh Answer: dental dams Answer: From what I understand, if you have a strain in one area, it won't go to the other area. So if you both have genital type 2, then neither would be able to get it orally. Answer: ^^yup^^ Even my doctor just told me the same thing. It is almost unheard of. Me and my honey both have GHSV2 and enjoy oral. We just know better not to when there are any.. I mean any signs of an outbreak. So far so good. Believe it or not, I believe this has brought us closer together even.. I have also decided if be and I hope it never happens that I go back on the dating scene. I will try to only seek out someone with the same as I. I cannot live with the thought of maybe giving this to someone. Answer: actually its more possible than you guys think........theres plenty of people on here who ended up getting it orally as well, but it seems to have taken longer to happen.......the odds increase the longer you are together and the number of times you perform/recieve oral. It definitely happens.......happened to a woman I know and Ive read several posts on here from people who it eventually happened to.not to rain on anyones parade but it happens more than people would like to believe. Answer: it sounds like tho, if you have hsv2, that even if you did get it orally, that you wouldn't have many outbreaks because type 2 just doesnt like making a home in the mouth area, so you would be highly unlikely to get recurrence, and also highly unlikely to have viral shedding in the saliva, etc. You already have to tell people about your hsv2 status anyway, so if you were to get it in your mouth as well it seems almost irrelevant. Answer: Just so you know my opinion; I for sure wouldn't give up my 'oral sex life', (both having ghsv2). I mean the fear of having some cold sores on the lip/mouth is in no way gonna stop me from all the pleasure we get from oral sex! It is not like we are talking about a deadly disease here. A cold sore on the lip is not the worst thing in the world. Add to that the fact that hsv2 is less likely to go oral + the fact recurrent outbreaks would be unusual ... if it happens anyway, well I will bear the consequences, so be it. If you weigh the pro versus the contra arguments it is worth it I think in this case. Of course this is a bit of a gut feeling thing. But I also think points like "theres plenty of people on here who ended up getting it orally as well" and "it happens more then you believe" are vague and based on gut feelings too, not based on statistical facts but on impressions and personal opinions.
