2nd opinion on treatment?!
Question: Ok ya'll, So my official diagnosis came yesterday (tho my first official OB started ten days ago) Anyhoo, I go to the doctors yesterday (for my second visit), to which he states that everything is clearing up well (I had a minor outbreak, its the achy crap that's making my blood boil). So here's the weird part...he prescribes me another seven day round of zovirax (acyclovir)...nothing else. I indicate to him, "hey, should I maybe...oh I dont know (snicker snicker)...begin suppressive therapy, being that I now have herpes and really am not cracked up about the idea of it surfacing again?" His response to me was, "No, we need to clear up the virus at the surface. If you have another OB, you call, and we'll get you more meds." OK? WHAT? Call when I have another OB? No no monsieur, you are mistaken, I DONT WANT ANOTHER ONE. So is this normal for docs to not prescribe suppressive therapy after initial diagnosis? Secondly, I began a lysine, calcium, zinc, bioflav supplement regiment yesterday. I mention this to him as an option for suppressive therapy. His response to me was "well, if it makes you happy, go ahead and take your vitamins, I'm not familiar with those things." ?????????????????? I'm sorry..but is this normal...or should i get a second doctor, MORE FAMILIAR with "those things" ugh. :? Answer: hey Olivia, i had my primary outbreak on June 8. My doc said it was a 'classic' case, and put me on Valtrex for 10 days....my ob healed within 4 days, very fast--thank GOD!! then at my follow-up appt, doc told me that the first year of the virus usually depicts how it unfolds (whether I will have one, two, ten, twenty ob's a year), so he didn't put me on any medicine (but did give me a script, of course, in case i get another ob)...He said as long as i stay healthy, and exercise, my body will do the rest...and there is a chance my body can take care of itself without medication.... so I am not on any prescription for HSV2. I do take lysine, and wellbutrin (for situational depression....thanks infector!!! asshole) Good news? I have been outbreak free and it has been 4 months:) btw, I did ask my doctor (who is also a surgeon, VERY good one where I live so I trust his word)...he said that with lysine, it does seem to help some people, but it hasn't been medically/clinically proven in studies to prevent outbreaks.... it could be the whole placebo deal....hey, but what the hell, i have been taking it:) hope this helps somehow.... oh yeah, and i would look into getting a new doctor. a surgeon cheers Answer: I don't like medication so I guess I'm biased. But I would agree with your doctor. Why take medication - suppressants - if you don't need them. And as you may not have another outbreak, then if I was you I'd wait and see. As far as vitamins etc go, then he seems to have given you their set response. They simply don't know - they're trained in this kind of thing. So I don't think we can knock them for that. Ohhhhh, just realised, I'VE SAID SOMETHING IN DEFENCE OF THE 'PROFESSIONALS' - a first for me!!!!!!!!!!!!! Answer: Thanks ya'll....maybe he's not as crazy as I thought he was...lol Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
