Question HSV 1 and transmission
Question: So about 2.5 years ago I had a cold sore and went to the dermatologist. They swabbed it and it came back that I had HSV-1. Doctor told me it was no big deal, that majority of the population has it. I have not had a cold sore since and have never taken any medication for it. My question is what risk is there to my partner? This is a new person I am dating and believe in full disclosure. She is concerned, my ex gf did not contract anything from me. Answer: HSV 1 on your mouth can be transmitted to the mouth of another as I had happen to me and it can be passed to the genitals as well through oral sex. A lot of people don't know this. Answer: But if I have no breakouts is my partner at risk? Answer: to quote the advertisement that runs every 30 minutes on my television: one study showed that 70% of people contracted herpes from their partners when there was no sign or symptom of an outbreak. There is always a risk - it is small but still possible. Are you sure that she has never experienced a coldsore of her own before this? I guess I go to that place where people hardly think about the risks of kissing and this is how most coldsores are spread to others. Some of us had them when we were such little children that we'd have difficulty remembering, especially if that was the first and only and then the virus became latent.
