Question:
Apologies for a long post, but I'm quite concerned about getting oral herpes as I'm sexually active, and would not want to cause genital herpes through oral sex.

At work today, I accidentally drunk from a colleague's can of coke while I wasn't looking, instead of my own. She has oral herpes and clearly had a cold sore today. I had only a rather quick, small sip as I was wearing lip gloss at the time, so hadn't wanted to rub it off. I realised what i'd done straight away as hers was diet coke (not the real stuff).

I don't know how long it had been since she'd had a sip. A few minutes maybe. I'm hoping the virus may have died on the aluminum can during that short time?

Do you think because I was wearing lipgloss, that may have given me some added protection?

I wiped my mouth as soon as I realised, but didn't think to scrub it with detergent until a couple of hours later. My colleague gave me a multivitamin and a Lip-syne tablet to take just in case.

To worsen the situation, the corners of my lips were cracked (probably due to iron deficiency or my plumping lip gloss - but you never know, i guess it could be herpes). I suppose having cuts on the corners of my lips makes it easier for the virus to get through.

I do think though, that there is a chance I already had oral herpes. I remember having 1 or 2 possible cold sores (accompanied by the tingle), 6 or more years ago (I'm 22 now). If I already have herpes, will this mean a reaction is less likely?

Any help would be much appreciated.

You are not going to contract herpes by drinking after somebody.

I guess my question to you is... why on Earth would you share a drink with other people in the first place?

actually you can get herpes from sharing drinks. i dated a guy for forever and when we broke up he started dating this really cute girl.. naturally i hated her. later me and this guy ended up dating again and he told me she had oral herpes and she got it from her dad when she was little from sharing drinks (this was in high school and she was pretty young i really don't think it was a lie)... anywho, her dad & her both had it and were really careful about spreading it, but she definitely got it from sharing drinks. i loved this about her and told as many people as i could cause i knew she was embarrassed about it and kept it secret.... now i have herpes.
