Herpes, run-around, confusion...help!

Question:
We're still seeking doctor's answers, but I'm dying for some input, so here I go.

My boyfriend and I have a long distance relationship and hadn't seen one another in 8 months. We're monogamous. He hasn't been with anyone else for three years. I haven't for two.

We're educated, older adults, so it's driving me nuts that we can't figure this out.

He arrived the first of the month, and within days of sleeping together, developed a rash/raw spot toward the head of his penis, became itchy and, also, several pimples (not in clusters.) It was too painful for sex, so we haven't engaged in anything since. After about a week, we took him to a clinic. Without any testing, the doctor said it was Herpes and sent him home with Valtrex.

The problem got increasingly worse and the Valtrex has been no help. In addition to a random pimple/blister here and there, the raw spot spread along his penis and scrotum, causing a bad burning sensation. Itching was present, too, but the burning was the worst part. It has spread to the upper part of his thighs.

The Herpes diagnosis led us to believe I unknowingly gave it to him. I ran off and got tested. Result: negative. I have never had symptoms like these, nor has he.

The only discomfort I have had as of late is an anal itch/rash which has been bugging me since last fall. It occurred soon after I stupidly shaved. Also, I had a broken foot at the time and was sitting a lot. I was on Percocet, which can make a person itchy and I've had hemmorhoids since being pregnant with my daughter 10 years ago. I'm also prone to heat rashes so I never suspected it was anything contagious. We also don't have anal sex. AND, we were together after this started in November and he never had a problem with me.

I should mention that after the intial discomfort he had, we engaged in some play without intercourse. The fingers he used inside me developed a couple of red spots like mosquito bites but never did anything else. Meanwhile, he genital discomfort has increased.

The raw spots feel like severe scrapes or burns, he says, and have oozed a clear substance. He was using cornstarch powder for relief during the time this all worsened.

Yesterday, I called my own doctor, unsure how to proceed. I thought maybe I should be seen and tested for whatever, since I'm the one with insurance and I seem to have infected him somehow. The doctor prescribed an antifungal cream for him. He started using it last night and his symptoms have greatly improved. He's still itchy but the burning is gone and the rash/lesions don't look so bad.

We're going to look into further testing, anyway, but this will take a while. In the meantime, I'd love some experienced opinions. If the antifungal cream works, can we rest assured this is a fungal infection? Could it still be Herpes even if he's never had an outbreak before?

This is so unfair. We were apart so long and now this. ARGH!

Thanks.

Answer:
Me again. Although no one replied, I thought I'd come back to say IT'S NOT HERPES!

Don't let anyone diagnose you with HSV without lab work. Ever.

I'm glad, but I'm pissed off about the misdiagnosis. My boyfriend was mistreated and we lost a lot of valuable time.

I think that's great and I hope I am that lucky. I'm really freaking out right not waiting for results.
