Question:
Ok, so I am totally freaking out right now, but trying to rationalize this.

I went to me doctor about a puffy lip. It looked like someone just slipped a jellybean under the skin on one side. I have been looking at pictures online and NOTHING I can find even comes close to what is on my lip.

The doctor said "It looks like it might be herpes" and then did a culture. That scared the crap out of me. I have been with the same girl for 7 years and neither of us have had anything like this at all. We have both had a canker sore or two during our lifetime, but nothing that looks like a breakout in the photos I see on Yahoo Images. It would be one, and then some baking soda would take it away in a day.

The thing is, I thought it was some sort of bug bite or allergic reaction, so I tried to pop it. A small amout of clear stuff came out but I was really trying. Popped it with a needle and squeezed it a lot! The next morning the skin came off and it swelled up to the jelly bean size. Take it that now the layer of skin was missing on top of it and there were a couple of craks in the skin where I had been squeezing really hard. ALL OF THIS HAPPEND BEFORE THE DOCTOR LOOKED AT IT!!!

^^just so you can think of what the doctor (registered nurse) saw.

Well, last night I took a few benadryls and the swelling has gone WAY DOWN...but now there's a kinda gross white film across it...

...which I think is just it trying to scab over from me ripping the skin off like an idiot and that's all.

There's been ZERO PUSS and nothing that looked like a cold sore at all. (meaning red around the outside and white in the middle. I think the only reason it hasn't scabbed over already was because it's moist by my mouth.

Questions:

The doctor made it sound like anyone who's ever had a canker sore in there mouth in their lifetime has herpes...is this true?

Does my description of a plain swollen lip, looking nothing more then like someone slipped a jelly bean under the skin sound like something anyone here has experienced?

The culture is not coming back until NEXT FRIDAY, so I am basically just scared and stuck waiting.

What do you think? Denial? Or miss diagnosed?

It just felt like the lady didn't believe me that I wasn't sleeping around or anything and I know my girl hasn't been messing around on me.


Also, it happend REALLY SUDDEN. I was sitting on the couch watching a movie and there was NOTHING there and all of a sudden that spot on my lip started swelling. Ate some Dominos Pizza (ham and cheese) and had some sprite. That's all I ate.

...do outbreaks happen that fast? Seriously, it was like nothing one seccond and jelly bean sized bunp the next.

I am just thinking that if I didn't rip the bump apart myself, the doctor wouldn't have been so quick to look at it and think it's something that it may not be. Then again, she was a doctor.

It just seemed like she didn't want to waste her time with a culture (which I made her do) and she didn't want to give me anthing for it....herpes related or allergic reaction related.


Anyways......what's your opinion?

Does it sound like anything herpes related?

Hi, there!

I don't know if your sore is herpes, but I will tell you:

1) The doctor means that anyone who has ever had a COLD SORE has Herpes Simplex 1. Also, 80-90% of people have Herpes 1. CANKER SORES are different. YOu can read more on this website at:



2) You could have had Herpes 1 in your system for years, and then suddenly have an outbreak. You can get this from kissing someone who doesn't even currently have a cold sore.

3) If it is herpes and you don't want to have symptoms, you can use anti-virals like Valtrex and/or topical ointments to put on the sore to make it go away faster.

Don't freak out. Almost everyone has this.

4 more questions:

1: If I had a bump the size of a jelly bean on my lip and it was herpes, would it go down almost to normal size in 24-36 hours without any topical solution or anything besides Benadryl?

2: Also, none of the pictures I have seen showed swollen lips...just lots of cold sores all over the lips. There were NO cold sores at all. It just swelled up and most likely would have stayed smooth skin if I didn't poke and rip at it to get the CLEAR stuff out.

3: Also, how fast would something that big form...as this appeared while sitting on my couch and watching a movie.

4: Last, the doctor said it would hurt when touched....is this true? Mine didn't hurt during the culture or really ever....even when I squeezed the hell out of it. Does this sound really abnormal for herpes?

Well, I'm not a (medical) doctor, and I also have no symptoms of herpes despite testing positive for Herpes 2, so I don't know what a herpes sore looks like and how it behaves from personal experience.

I would wait for the results of your culture.

Maybe you just got bitten by a bug.
