Needing some advice

Question:
Hi all,

I had a gyno appointment about two weeks ago and asked to be given a full std test. I am generally careful about sleeping with people, i.e. using condoms, but unfortunately have had unprotected sex in the past. I had not planned on it but before I got the results back I got caught up in the moment and very recently had unprotected sex. I felt very shameful after having done that but got over it until my results came back positive for Herpes. I was shocked, to say the least. You can’t imagine how horribly guilty I feel for possibly infecting my partner that night. I’ve been reading a bit on this horrible disease and realized I could have had this for weeks, months or even years. Now, on top of trying to come to terms with the fact that I have Herpes, I’m wondering how to bring this up with the guy from a few nights ago. We are friends but have not known each other all that long, couple of months, but I know I need to tell him. Just wondering exactly how and what to say. Any advice?? Thanks!

Answer:
I haven't had to do this, but if it were me, I would say something like "There's something I need to tell you: I am very careful about getting STD screening each year, and I just got my test results back saying that I am positive for the Herpes virus. Although the chances are slim that I infected you, I think you should be tested, too." and then make sure you have some clear information about Herpes printed out for him. Good luck!
