Just when I thought I knew...

Question:
I suppose in a way I am newly diagnosed. I found out I had GH 10 yrs ago and was with the person that gave it to me for quite sometime. There is no mistaking that first OB which occurred after about 4 months. He had cold sores somewhat frequently and said he had been having them since he was a kid. I never ever saw any sores or signs of GH on him. I just assumed that I got GH from his cold sores. So now, 10 yrs later I decide to get down to business and find out for sure which type. Lo and Behold it is HSVII. I was stunned. I know they can go every which way, but I sit and wonder hmm...What are the odds that he probably contracted type II orally from someone who had it genitally, then gave it to me, genitally. Assuming that his oral OB are type II. May it be safer to assume that he may have had GH and I never saw any symptoms? Just had to get all that out...

Answer:
He could have given you the HSV2 through oral sex. Or he could have had it genitally and not known it, so both are possiblities.

Answer:
Oral HSV2 is not very common. The probability is that your partner in question had HSV2 genitally and transmitted it that way.

An IgG antibody test for him for both type 1&2 might be helpful in figuring this out, but herpes is such a tricky little virus, it's usually not productive to try to figure out where it came from if you've had more than one sexual partner in your lifetime.

Hopefully the shock is lessened by the knowledge that you've had herpes during these past 10 years and it's just the type that's different.
