IgM Nightmare HELP ME
Question: Ok, I am sure everyone or many are aware that herpes experts say that IgM tests are MEANINGLESS. But please, please please help me if you know the answer to my problem. I have been tested twice now for IgG and IgM. My IgG has been negative both times, but the first time my IgM was in the middle range (.95) which is undetermined and that is why I got retested 2 weeks later. My IgG was still too low to be positive, but now my IgM was definitely positive. My doctor is clueless and just said this means I have herpes. The national herpes hotline says not true, because IgM tests are pointless and they do not acknowledge them. Here is the problem though.... Whenever you research WHY IgM is meaningless, three reasons always appear. However, in my case, (and possibly many others) it would seem as though these reasons do not apply. Here are the reasons they say, and next to them I have written why this does not help) 1) IgM may not show up in a recently infected person (This does not help me because my IgM IS showing up, so it does not apply. This means I cannot reject IgM for thsi reason) 2)IgM positives can occur in RECURRENT herpes, therefore it may not indicate a recent infection (This does not help me either, because I am not concerned with whether it is recent or not, I just want to know if I have it at all, regardless of when. Therefore I cannot reject the IgM for this reason) 3) The third says that the test can be confused with other things like chickenpox and mono, so a false positive could occur. However I researched this and this is either cohly unlikely, or straight out untrue, and no published medical information has pointed to this. So if number three reason is the only thing I got goim for me, on why I should reject my IgM result, I think I am screwed. Can anyone tell me why I am wrong or at least agree with me if they're in the same boat? I want so so so so badly to reject the IgM but based on this I see no reason why I can, and thus I have herpes. Please help. Answer: negative? according to those test anything above a .90 is positive. thats what it says in the key next to your results. this happened to me as well, i took 3 blood test, first one .03, 2nd .00 3rd, was like 3.5 or something. my doc had nothing to say other then " positive" i was like ok well how do you explain the first 2 negatives... well blah blah coldsores... i was like dude i came to you with my genitals on fire, nothing about cold sores. and you shouldnt reject it, it still detected herpes, whether its new or old, it still did detect it. and ive had chicken pox twice~ and that didnt affect my previous test. personaly w/ your test score im going to say you have it. but if you want a really good test get the "western blot" only 1 lab does this, and its a bitch to get it but you will def know for sure. Answer: I would trust the IgG results. But one thing, when do you think you had your initial infection? If it hasn't been 3 months, that might explain the weirdness. But Waxed is right, at this point, just get a Western blot done. It is the gold standard when it comes to diagnoses. Answer: just a quick clarification....i didn't mean to imply .95 was negative...I had wrote that the first test IgM of .95 is considered in the unknown midzone (.90 to 1.01). I am just asking if anyone has any knowledge on why IgM's are useless OTHER than the reasons I stated (which obviously do not matter in my case) Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
