i just found out i am infected with genital herpes on monday. i have been faithful to the same guy for 7 months and him to me. this is such a sudden event we're both having problems figuring out what could have happened. nothing really changed in our sex life which is what's the most confusing part. i was clean in feb. for my yearly pap. and the last test he had was back in november. is there any way it could have been dormant and he passed it to me, and my outbreak triggered his? or is it a better possibility that one of us had a cold sore and passed it to the other though oral sex? and does the fact i broke out first have any relevance?

pap smears usually just test for hpv.
usually unless you request a herpes specific test, any test you take will not test for herpes. if he had a std test- aswell, it does not test for herpes unless he requested it.

it could have been dormant in EITHER one of you.(genital or oral) and it can be dormant for years before anything happens.

possibly, that you are the one who was dormant.
