Can only a blood test diagnose which type?
Question: Can someone please explain, why i have read that only a blood test will determine which type of HSV you have? When i was diagnosed with GHSV 1 this was diagnosed by a culture and never had a blood test done ??? Answer: Both the culture and PCR test can be typed for HSV1 or HSV2. A positive culture will reveal type and location. An IgG bloodtest is also typed for HSV1 or HSV2, but can not reveal the location. The norm is oral HSV1 and genital HSV2. However, you can either/both types is either/both locations. Oral HSV2 is very rare. 30% of new genital herpes cases are HSV1 because oral sex is so popular.
