How much and how to share......

Question:
I was diagnosed with herpes 1 and 2 only last month so I am still having a hard time adjusting, accepting and learning. Do I tell my kids? They are 21, 16, 15 and 13. They are asking me what is wrong, because I stopped kissing them on the lips and have asked them not to take drinks from my water bottles any more. They also saw the array of vitamins I just bought. If I do tell them, how much information do they need to know? They all know what STDs are, and that scares me because they also know where and how a person contracts the disease. I do not want them to think I am dirty or that I sleep around. UGH, this is so horrible and difficult.

Answer:
just tell them u get coldsores and you dont want them to get them.

if its Ghsv then u dont need to stop kissing them.

Answer:
what is Ghvs?

Answer:
oops, Ghsv???:(

Answer:
ghsv = genital herpes simplx virus

ohsv = oral herpes simplex virus.

Answer:
if i recall, doc said i had both. so kissing my kids or anybody else, for that matter????

Answer:
bluefrog have you ever had a cold sore? Just because the virus is associated with oral cold sores does not mean that you are infected there. Or do you just have genital ob's?

You can have both hsv1 and hsv2 located only genitally or the other way around. Do you know? Sometimes we don't have ob's but get a blood test and it shows both strains of the virus or we do have an ob and get tested and we are sure of the location and the testing just confirms which virus is causing the ob's. Yes it is confusing as heck.

And I don't know that I would disclose too much information to my kids. I made that mistake with my son and you can't take it back. Just think about it carefully and what information they need to know. My kid is a worry wart and he's not the best candidate for lots of info.

Answer:
Caliope,

I have never ever had a cold sore. i just recall the dreadful call from my doc and i believe he said i have both 1 and 2. it was a surreal moment, so i don't know much else that followed that initial, hello, your test was positive. there is no way for the blood tests to know where the virus is right? I am not quite sure my ob-gyn is the best person to question about this. are std clinics manned 24/7? are there knowledgeable people who work there? what type of doctor would i want to go into depth with this? also what i read about blood tests was that is takes 1-2 weeks for results, mine: blood drawn on a friday call from the doc the following tuesday......does that sould right?

Answer:
caliope,

back to the kid(s); thank you for your input. i guess i will keep it to myself.
