Welcome to www.thanktoday.com !!!

Is this still my first outbreak???

Question:
It has been a very long month. I was diagnosed on 21 May by my OB/GYN, she put me on 10 days of Valtrex...within 48 hours I was feeling so much better. I have (obviously) finished my initial prescription of the Valtrex, but am still broken out and uncomfortable. It isn't nearly as painful as when I was first diagnosed, and I know that first outbreaks are usually the longest.

BUT, come on!!! I'm going on week 5 here and I'm still pretty itchy and I've got two sores that I can see. I'm still using the Zovirax ointment, but should I take more of the Valtrex...the 1/2 a pill for three days like I would for a reccurance?

Besides being terribly confused, I feel pretty alone, shamefull...fill in the blank there. My husband is having a hard time understanding. We've been through more in our six years of marriage than most couples we know that have been married for 10+ years. I just don't want something as stupid as this virus to be the straw to break the camels back.

Thank goodness there are places like this where people can "talk" without being judged.

Answer:
umm 1/2 a pill, for 3 days?
for a outbreaks you should be taking 500mg to 1g (1 to 2 times a day)
for daily therapy its 1 pill, once a day, everyday.

i think your doc has you on barely nothing thats why your outbreak is lasting this long. even though unfortunatly they can and do last longer.

tell your doc you want to be on the daily therapy, and need alot more then 10 days.

Answer:
I didn't realize until after the post by WaxedWrong that I had my Rx incorrect. Let me clarify, my OB/GYN wrote me for 1g twice daily for 10 days when she diagnosed me.

We (including my DH) discussed my treatment options and decided that for now we were going to treat outbreaks as they occured, meaning 500mg twice a day for three days when outbreaks reoccur. If we find that I'm having them very frequently we'll consider daily suppressive therapy at that time.

I'm also looking into taking additional supplements and changing my diet...but I'm not quiet sure where to start looking. We have to be reasonable here...I am from the land of beer, brats, and cheese. There are some things that I'm not quite ready to give up.

Here are some links that you might find informative.

When I was newly diagnosed I went searching for answers to how to not let this virus rule my life. It's certainly been a battle and even if I still get ob's I'm feeling better in many other ways.

I found that taking certain daily vitamin supplements helps me to be less emotional and feel better.

I highly recommend adding at the very least Lysine and Vitamin C with bioflavanoids to your daily routine. It also helps to pay attention to foods that are high in an amino acid called arginine and avoid them as often as possible.

best wishes

wooo, i was so confused with the first post. thinking what the hell is wrong with her doctor.lol.

and dont worry you dont have to give up every food you love. but if its your trigger food, just consume a little less, and take some more supliments to help even it out.
