mass confusion

Question:
Here's what's going on .... can someone figure this out for me???

My first Dr. wasn't very helpful...diagnosis over the phone, I had to insist to get an appt.~~the nurse didn't see the need for me to come in. He gave me 3,000 mg of Valtrex a day (yes, 3,000) and told me to use benadryl cream on the sores (yes, benadryl), He also said the I should bleach the towels after I use them so that I don't 'contaminate' my kids. (yes, he did say contaminate). That was all the info he gave me, I had to figure everything else out on my own.

Fastforward to my bf being tested negative.... that caused major stress because now I had to figure out where I got it. I had had two previeous relationships~~7 years and over 10 years. Never so much as a cold sore.

Now on to new Dr. She spent 45 minutes answering every question I had and even ones I didn't know I had. She said that they probably gave my boyfriend the wrong test, and that the chances that I got it from him are great. (He says that he has gotten cold sores before) She explained the difference between antigens and antibodies~~and how he could have tested negative when he is positive. She also said that they could have tested him for HSV 2 instead of HSV 1 which is what I have.

So I gave my boyfriend all of this information. Let me say that we are beyond the 'blame game'. When we discuss this, he always says that WE have it, not just me. He has educated himself, just as I have. He has been ever supportive thru my meltdowns.

I think he should be retested. Not because I want him "to be the one who started it", that doesn't even matter to me at this point. I have heard that if someone has it orally, the chances of him getting it genitally are slim to none. I almost want him to test positive, so that the chances that I could pass it to him genitally are lower. Does this make sense to anyone? Is this true?

Does anyone know what blood test he should take to find out if he has the antibodies for HSV1? What tests would be useless? He is not sure what test they gave him.

Answer:
There is probably somebody on these forums that knows more than I do. However, I did read that igm tests are generally useless for established infections - you want him to be tested for igg. HerpeSelect supposedly can distinguish between HSV-1 and HSV-2.

I have also read that having OHSV is protective against GHSV and vice versa. The body produces antibodies that make it less likely for the virus to establish an infection. I found that this site features a similar question:

Answer:
I would prolly get him tested again too. It's great that he is supportive of the things your going through. It's nice not to have to play the blame game with people.
