Where in chain to put noise gate pedal?
Question: I looked for a previous thread on this but couldn't find one. But given my limited abilities, that probably doesn't mean there isn't one, so if there is, please point me to it. Otherwise... I was wondering where everyone prefers to put a noise gate pedal in their chain. I have a Boss NS-2 on the way and am wondering where to put it in my present chain: Guitar-->Crybaby Wah-->DOD Milk Box Compressor-->Visual Sounds Rt 66-->Fulltone Fulldrive 2-->Boss Blues Driver-->Boss OS-2-->Boss PH-2 Phaser-->Boss CH-1 Chorus-->Ernie Ball Volume pedal-->Boss DD-5 delay-->amp. My amp (Crate Palomino V16) doesn't have an effects loop, so that isn't a possibility (otherwise, I would have all the modulation and time-based effects in the loop). Thanks in advance for your help. Answer: I'd prolly try it just before the volume pedal.....I bet your setup sounds sweet! I have the 30 watt version, and I really really diggit.....~Shawn Answer: Yeah, I'm a pretty big fan of the Palominos...of course, with incurable G.A.S., I've had my eye on a Vox AC30 for some time...in the meantime, the Palomino was a good combination of tube amp and affordability and the 15 watt V16 works good for leading worship, tone and volume-wise. As for my setup, I'm pretty happy with it. I get a nice range of tones appropriate for P&W...except that it can be a little too hissy sometimes, especially when I crank the Rt.66's compressor for a punchy clean. Thus, the need for a noise suppressor. My guess was that it should go at the end of the undelayed signal (before the delay), but I wanted to confirm that. Answer: Well it has an effects loops set up ive read on the boss site. SO run your guitar into and run all the other effects thru the fefects loop and then the out put to the amp. CHekck the boss site they'll tell you ive read up on it on there. Answer: I would put it just before the volume pedal, so the volume pedal doesn't freak the gate out....just an idea....I hate it when I wanna get quiet and can't because the gate shuts....Yes, the 30 watter is a bit too loud when I'm leading worship on Sundays, especially because the louder you thurn it the better it sounds....so....this sunday I'm going to start putting it in a huge road case and micing it Answer: I use the NS2 and run in loop mode. This has a few advantages, the main one being that it is only the guitar noise that you are gating - not the noise from any of the pedals. All the noise from the pedals will be cut, but you can have the threshold lower - hope you understand what I mean. Basically, if the guitar signal goes below the threshold, then the output signal and the loop is cut. Anyway, I put wah and distortions and chorus in the loop and have delay and tremolo after the NS2. Guitar plugs directly into the NS2 and it is set to mute mode so that the pedal mutes for guitar changes. Delay is outside the loop so that repeats don't get cut off. Regards John Answer: wow...that's an interesting pedal! Answer: Now, to confuse the issue, let me throw this into the mix... I also just picked up a Rocktron Hush pedal (too good of a deal to pass up). Supposing I keep the Hush pedal and sell the NS-2 (because I would guess I can get more for the Boss on Ebay), where would I put it? The Hush doesn't have a loop like the NS-2. So, would the consensus be to put it before the volume pedal? Answer: Originally Posted by plawren53202 Now, to confuse the issue, let me throw this into the mix... You can swap them around and see where the volume suits best. Stick your delay after these two and the rest before.
