Amp-->system, does wattage matter?
Question: I desperately need a new amp. I want a marshall combo because I love the sound of the overdrive channel...its just the perfect sound for me. But the thing is I'm not sure what I need. If i'm running Guitar-->Amp-->System (through line out) does it matter what the wattage is? I currently do not use an amp when playing and its loud enough, I dont see why getting an amp would change my ability to get loud enough, but if it would please let me know. My situation: Venues: small church, Theatre (1000 capacity w/balcony), and other small venues (under 1000 cap.) Current vol. control: The volume on my MagicStomp (the only parameter on it that is never bypassed) Amp wanted: Marshall MG50 Other amps considered: Vox AD30VTX, AD50VTX Thanks Answer: You're going to use the Line Out feature and not mic the amp? If I were you, I'd go with the AD30 - it's a decent sounding amp, and plenty loud enough. The line-out's tone kinda sucks on it. The internal speaker is muted (can't use it as a personal monitor), and the tone is way too fizzy through it, at least on mine. If you go with that amp, I'd mike it on stage when you're running to the PA, though I don't even do that at church. Answer: So when I use the emulated line out it still uses the pre-amp right? (thats probably a big duh) I didnt plan on using it as a personal monitor (except for at church). We have an in-ear system and stage monitors both at the Theatre, so I'd be using one of those. And one more thing...I see pro's all the time with their half-stacks and combos about 15 feet behind them sometimes. Thats a long way, do they make footswitches with cables that long? Answer: definitely a big duh they do make footswitches that long. Some companies make footswitches and cabling separate (Fender does this with their newer footswitch models). Also, some pros have their guitar/amp techs do all their switching for them Answer: Unfortunately I do not have a tech to switch my effects backstage or at the sound board (it might be nice but i just think its more "real" for the musician to do it himself...its just part of playing the song to me). Well I tried out the MG50 today, I really like it. Thanks for all the info guys. Answer: I'll caution you on the Marshall MG series. I bought the MG30 because I wanted a little amp to carry around instead of lugging my half stack all the time. I should have waited to get a small tube amp. I personally find the distortion to be tinny and harsh. Just a warning. Answer: You really want to use a mic in front of the amp, because whenever you use a line out, you're not getting at all the same sound you're hearing from the amp. Answer: I agree. However, if I may add another suggestion. If you have $400 to spend, and this is just for church use, and you have a moniter for yourself, get a Line 6 POD XT Live. It is a small portable floorboard that will take care of all your amp and effects needs. Very easy to use, and will sound way better then any of the amps you listed. Plus for your use as well, it is designed to go direct to the board. Answer: This isnt just for church use. I'll be playing shows...possibly large youth rallies in big cities on mission trips. Let me point out that I recently saw a show of a 3-guitar band (The Receiving End of Sirens) and each guitarist used a Pod XT Live. The other bands that night used any given combination of All-tube Marshall, Orange, Mesa/Boogie, and Vox all had great tone (especially the Vox band, check em out: Astallaslions, listen to 'The Carousel'), The line 6 sound just absolutely floored me. Turned me into a believer 100%. Answer: Originally Posted by Casey Let me point out that I recently saw a show of a 3-guitar band (The Receiving End of Sirens) and each guitarist used a Pod XT Live.
