PedalBoard Idea
Question: Ok so I'm planning my pedalboard and what I want and everything but thing is what I want for my pedal board I cant find so I'm going to describe it and if they dont make it then could you guys help me figure out how to make it so i can print the topic for l8er use. Ok to start I want it to hold these pedals when I get them MXR Dyna Comp Boss DS-1 Ibanez TS9DX Boss MT-2 Boss DD-2 MXR Phase 90 Boss CS-3 Boss OC-3 Boss GE-7 Vox V847 reissue wah Electro Harminox Deluxe Memory Man But I want it to hold 2 or 3 rack units. These 2 or sure Carvin Wirless System http://www.carvin.com/products/singl...X16-BP&CID=WIR http://www.carvin.com/products/singl...=UX-DR&CID=WIR And like a korg rack tuner Or A Boss TU-2. I love the look of this floorboard but it wont hold it all but I want it to look exactly like this as like the angle and the outside of it. http://www.musiciansfriend.com/produ...cts?sku=159502 But heres the thing I want to be able to wire it so I can plug in my guitar and run thru it but in the back I want something kinda like this http://www.carvin.com/products/singl...=C805&CID=RSPK So I can plug 2 cables in and got my effects loop. So I want to wire it so I got straight to the amp and and the effects loop effects,But have it all rigged on the pedal board so theres an in and out on the back for the effects loop and in in for my guitar and an out to the amp input. Now I plan on doing all this thru a Vox AC-30 CC2 when ever I get it. Now you may think I've got alot of Ideas but I've always been big on planning everything way before I buy it so this will be over years but I want it all planned out to put in my binder with all my guitar ideas and purchases I want to make so I have it for future refrence. Answer: Okay I updated my website so it has all this but pic's instead of links so I'll give you the link so you can go there and either post your comments here or email em to me on the link on my site. Yeah, they are well known, but they are usually far from the best out there. (Exceptions going to the TU-2 tuner and the DD-20 delay in my mind) Looking at what you have, I could suggest some much better options without increasing the cost too much. And to add to that, take this advice - save up and buy the best now. Yeah, you won't get stuff as fast, but you won't have to upgrade ever. It will save you a lot of money in the long run. - Would you really use all of this? I did the exact same thing two or three years back when I first discovered the world of pedals. Since then, I have actually gained experience with a lot of different effects, and I figured out exactly what I liked and what I didn't like. I bought effects then because I knew that I would use them. Thus far, I have only one effect in my possession that has not recieved relatively heavy use (my Dano Fish & Chips, and that is only because of board layout issues). Just a few other points besides that regarding actual choices. - I've heard that the Carvin wireless systems are pretty good, so I would imagine you would be fine there, though I personally don't see the need for wireless unless you are on a big stage. (Then again, I don't move around a lot when I play so...) - Check out NYC Pedalboards. Not quite as many fancy features, but the boards are plenty big, very well made, and a lot cheaper then what you have listed. I personally own the Big Shot, and I love it. So overall, I don't mean to rain on the parade. Doing this stuff is fun, and I enjoy jumping around looking at the latest and greatest pedals myself. What I have learned however, is that as you get better and develop your style, you realize more and more what works for you and what doesn't. (Though as a disclaimer - for all I know, you have thouroughly planned out exactly what you would and wouldn't use.) For example, when I first planned out my future board, I had all sorts of modulation effects, from flange to phasors, to synths. I now know that I would never use most of them. The only modulation effect I use is chorus, and that is only in moderation, and for very specific applications. Oh, and come this September, if you want to come try out a bunch of various higher end effects, i'm a student at George Fox University just 15-20 minutes away from you. You're more then welcome to drop by and play around with my rig. By that time I should hopefully have a new Carvin Bolt... Answer: Ok cool with the palying around on pedals. Another thing is I dont realy need all those pedals tommorw ill make a list of the ones I relaly want and what to use. I know for sure I want the memory man ive used it and the dd series from boss and I like the analog delay sound alot better. I already got a TS9DX all modded up and stuff so I got that and it works great for drive so there mainly goes the blues driver,ds1,mt2. So the rest of the pedals are what I really want and I doubt Ill get the super octave. Like I got the TS9DX and all I use for church and home is my amp and that and I prefer that to anything. Before I got it at home all I would do is play on the amp. But mainly I like the Edge sound and stuff and various other artists like Randy Rhoads and zak wylde. Huge range of stuff I like. But Ill probally go with this list of pedals for sure MXR Dyna Comp MXR Phase 90 Boss CS-3 Boss GE-7 Vox V847 reissue wah Electro Harminox Deluxe Memory Man And of course my TS9DX Thing is I got the rack gear list on there to put on the pedal but I dont know witch tuner to get what do you guys recommend. And I'm looking into the Boss GE-7 or the MXR 10 band eq instead. Ive used the boss before and fell in love with it so I'll probally go with that. Answer: Going on to individual pedal thoughts now... Tuner: if you're going with a pedalboard, then the Boss TU-2 will probably be best. It really is quite good. EQ: Actually, while I haven't tried them myself, I hear that the Dano Fish & Chips is better sounding then the Boss and MXR counterparts. Not to mention it costs less (though it isn't as durable). I got mine for 15$ used I believe. Delay: Analog is good, however, if you're going to be doing U2, and pretty much anything requiring timing, you're going to want a digital delay with tap tempo. Again, props to the Boss DD-20 here. While I haven't compared it side by side with an analog delay, I hear that it is one of the better simulations out there. Wah: Great choice. I miss my old Vox sometimes. When my Teese finally breaks down, I bet I go back to Vox. Compression: If I make a suggestion. Check out the Barber Tone-Press. Extremely high quality compressor, and it only costs 20-30$ more then the CS-3 if I remember right. And speaking as an owner of both the Tone Press and the CS-3, and having done side by side comparisons, the Tone Press is in a completely different league then the CS-3. Sounds worlds better, and has a fraction of the hiss (the CS-3 is darn noisy...) Phase: Don't use em, don't know a thing about them. I'll leave it to people who know what they're talking about. Answer: What are you using the eq for? Boost? If you're using it all the time, I wouldn't bother with it. I've never seen the point in the eq though. I thought that what amp eq was for. Phaser. Are you going for the EVH style phaser, bearing in mind the phase 90 is pretty low on controls. I would look at a boss phaser. Loads of people use it. I plan to get one for my little pedalboard plan. Also look at the loooper for true bypass if you're thinking of that kind of thing. My own little idea is: Ernie Ball Volume Jr => Boss TU2 tuner in tuner out Jim Dunlop Wah Toadworks Deathrattle => send to amp effects return custom 2 loooper with master bypass loop 1 => boss TR-2 loop 2 => boss PH-5 Line 6 DL4 Thats planned after 18 months of messing about with as many of the effects on a boss me-50 as possible. That's my dream setup really. Either that or: Sweet jazzbox => polytone amp Answer: Pianoman: when you were talking bout compression you were taking bout the boss CS-3 witch is actually a chorus the dyna comp is the compressor. Telecasting: The phase the reason I'm getting the phase 90 is its cheaper and I can mod it to the EVH script phaser for alot cheaper all you have to do its remove to diodes. See so if something hums or anything like that I can fix it I dont plan on leaving like any of these pedals stock I'll mod em kidna like I did to my TS9DX. But I'm still thinkin my efects im pretty set on that list I gave you guys but it can change if I see better oh and the deluxe memory man my friend has it and im pretty sure it has a tap tempo on it. Hey I check out NYC pedal boards and I love em mainly the big shot cause it hold everything,But one thing is there any way to conscele the cables cause I want it to look neat and not clutterd thats the one thing that was nice bout that MKS one is all the cables run underneath so you dont see em. Answer: sounds like you're aiming for the edges tone. NICE !! Answer: Actually, it is surprisingly easy for me to keep my Big Shot perfectly clean. Maybe not as clean as what you have listed, but wires are definitely not a problem for me. Oh, and oops to my compressor mistake. I still would recommend the Tone Press though. Dynacomps are nice, and certainly better then the Boss Compressor, but not that nice. Answer: Tone press who makes em and Ill defiitley check them out. I listed the pedals I did cause I know em and the're what I want to do so if anyone can she me other ones that are better ill consider em and check em out . Answer: some will shoot me down on this but i'm a diy guy so i posted a pic of my board. personally i like the diy option cause i paid 25 dollars total for my board instead of 300 from a company. i'm not a touring rock star so i dont need that... yet as you can see the light coulored mdf board around the board is a riser and many pedalboards use that and i think it makes it look more professional. (i am gonna paint it sometime) i simply bought a 2' by 4' sheet of plywood and cut that in half for the board and the case. then i reinforces the board on the bottom by attaching strips of wood to the bottom. then for the case i took 1/2 inch plywood sheets and built a sturdy box to cover the pedalboard as you can see my wireless (half covered by the multifx) is a standard rack size. i just hold the rp200 on with a plastic zip tie (very secure if your sceptical) and black electrical tape. I assume that you could take that idea and build a small 3-4 space rack mounted in the back of your pedalboard and put your other pedals in front of it like i did. the spaces to the sides of the racks could be used for pedals you dont press as often or power supplies. I went to a industrial electronics shop and got the plugs for the patch cables for 70 cents each and the cable from my local music store for 90 cents a foot (by the way this is in CAD). you can go to the local hardware store and purchase metal corners, handles and latches to attach the case. well thats my two cents on the subject put IMO unless you tour nationally you dont need to buy a pedalboard from a company. I've used my board to and form church all the time and hasnt broken yet!! Answer: No offense man this is personal prefrence but to me that is to clutterd and tacky. I dont mind paying for a professional one since it will really last me and I plan on using it im playng for church and stuff and eventually I want to getin a band and tour or start doing studio musician work. Its cool you built that but that is just not for me. But I agree DIY stuff is fun and better but in this area right now I'm not looking for something like you got s rry man but its still cool you built it and it works for you. Answer: Originally Posted by guitarjockey111 I want to getin a band and tour or start doing studio musician work. doesnt everyone haha well good luck with the board finding.. i'm just wondering why dont you put your rack fx at the amp end? i see most guitarists doing that? in fact... you should look at a tc electronics g-system http://www.tcelectronic.com/G-System you can rack mount all your fx pedals... minus wah and volume pedals... and control it all from one console on your pedal board. even if you dont want to check it out it's sweet!! Answer: Lol dude that thing is cool I've looked at it bad thing is I dont got 1000+ dollars to spend on that. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
