New Amp
Question: Ok, basically I'm looking at about 1000-1500 to spend on a new amp. I have no idea where to start. I'm into anything from Trivium, to Dream Theater, to AC/DC, to Shadows Fall, to Black Label Society. I was sort of leaning towards the Peavey XXX, but I have no idea yet. Anyways, I'd love suggestions as to what you all think I should get. Thanks for any help. Answer: Peavey Ultra will be cheaper, used. Yamaha T100 or T50, perhaps, for cheapies (though you still have to get a cab). Head? Combo? Answer: I want a head and a cab, not a combo. The way it's lookin I'm gonna have about 1600 to spend on a head/cab. Just no idea what I'm gonna get. Answer: Well, I would say wait for the Carvin V3 to come out and get it, but since you didn't like the MTS, i'm not sure what to say, though the V3 may very well end up being very different than that. We shall see, you might consider it. As far as the groups you mentioned, those that I know of use either Marshalls or Mesas. You might try and find a used Marshall JCM800 or a Mesa Roadking. They would fit your bill well, though to be honest, I have no idea if they are in your price range. Then try to find a good sound on the MTS.. and if I can do that I'll just keep it. I think even a used JCM or Roadking with a cab would be out of my price range. Answer: used roadkings go for 2000+. That amp is my dream amp. Period. Answer: Originally Posted by Casey used roadkings go for 2000+. That amp is my dream amp. Period. Ha! My dream amp costs 25% of that. I played a JCM 800... It was very stale sounding. The clean channel is great though. The distortion was... bleh. Answer: I thought I would through Line-6 into this discussion. I'm not saying they are the best, but I would give them a try. I have a Spider II 112 and for 75watts it's pretty loud. Line 6 also offers heads and cabs, try it, see if you like the favors. Answer: ^ I've tried a few Line 6.. they're not bad.. just not as good as I'd like. I really prefer the all tube sound. I emailed the guy at eurotubes and asked about a good tube setup for the sound I want. I also stopped by the Carvin boards and checked some other very similar problems.. apperantly switching the speakers out with celestions help alot too.. not sure yet. Answer: Well i have a Mesa mark IV, john petrucci used mark II C+. I believe that you should be able to find these on ebay for about 1000. here is a link to the gear petrucci uses. http://johnpetrucci.com/equipment_6degrees.html I hope that this helps Answer: Originally Posted by wesley7777 Well i have a Mesa mark IV, john petrucci used mark II C+. He used the Road King on Train of Thought and immediately started singing its praises. He used it on their most recent album also. Answer: yeah but the roadking is 2500 dollars and i believe he still uses a mark Answer: Originally Posted by JC_music07 ^ I've tried a few Line 6.. they're not bad.. just not as good as I'd like. I have a line6 Flextone duo and at the church I've started playing at recently, almost everyone has been shocked to find out that it's not a tube amp. I'm pretty happy with it, although the one reason I really like it is the versatility it has without a bunch of pedals and tubes to replace. Plus, it's friggin indestructible - unlike a tube amp I would probably go back to a tube amp and pedals though if I were to join a band - a non praise music band that is Answer: Why do you believe that? Have you read something that leads you to believe that he still uses a mark? In what I've heard of the new CD, he utilises the same ulta-heavy modern metal tones used in Train of Thought (a la Road King). Answer: Originally Posted by la_meteo Why do you believe that? There was a picture of his guitar rigs on another website about 6 months ago, he still had all the roadkings and then just one of the marks in the stack let me see is i can find the photo.
