Big Muff?
Question: What's the difference between these two Muffs? Expensive Cheap The cheap one says it has low-noise transistors, but that would make it more expensive, normally, wouldn't it? Answer: The more expensive one costs more because it's made in the US, has a metal chassis, and probably s'more stuff. Both have the low-noise transistors. Answer: Hm.....I belive because the other one is more is because its a reissue....Which is why I think it costs more......I hear it's all a matter of taste some like one....some like the other Originally Posted by ieatdirt What's the difference between these two Muffs? Answer: With only a $25 price difference, I think the main thing is the labor and chassis. Answer: What exactly do you mean by labor? Like how much was put into it? I don't really mind plastic chassis, cause I don't kill my pedals. Answer: if im not mistaken, the latter looks like the russian copy. in the 1980's EH went belly up, and mike mathews(founder) began to produce muffs in russia around '94-'95ish. it turns out that the NYC reissue came back, along with EH in 1999 maybe? as stated, they're not made in the usa...and have minor construction and tonal(??) differences. I've also heard that the russians are near impossible to mod, if you care. Answer: Originally Posted by ieatdirt What exactly do you mean by labor? Like how much was put into it? Make two identical products, one in the US and one overseas, and you'll find that the US one will cost more. The more expensive one is the classic EH Big Muff...the black one is actually supposed to be based on the old Sovtek BM Pi which was in a green housing (at least i think that's how it goes) Answer: sovtek...any relation to the valve manufacturer? Answer: Originally Posted by omensixaxe sovtek...any relation to the valve manufacturer? I believe they are one and the same. Answer: As it's kinda been stated, the black one is made in Russia and the silver more expensive one is made in the US. I've personally used the Russian, and I didn't like it at all. Pretty crappy in my opinion. I haven't used a US one personally, but they're supposed to sound better. Answer: The green Sovtek Muff was the original reissue. The black ones are just the evolution of the green ones. The black russian Muffs have a completely different circuit layout than the NYC muffs, and some say that they don't sound as good as the old green ones or the NYC reissues. (Or the originals) Also, nothing is impossible to mod, you just have to figure out what coresponds to what on the board. I've only played the Black Muff I have right now, and I think it's wonderful. Gets a very nice sputtery muffled fuzz when I push it with my old Guyatone Zoom Distortion. It's all a matter of taste, and from what I've heard, every muff has it's own flavor, so go try some out, see if you like it. Boards with all (or mostly) surface mount components would be extremely difficult to mod. I'm talking resistors the size of the comma on your keyboard without wire leads. And they're becoming more common. But I doubt any Big Muff is ever that hard to mod simply because they all come in much larger enclosures than you need for a circuit that simple. If memory serves me right, it's 4 transistors, 4 diodes, 3 pots, about 8 capacitors and maybe 12 resistors. Answer: ive heard horror stories about trying to mod it to true bypass too. I opened it up once....and decided to never do that again.... Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
