A talk box takes the signal from your amp and routes it through a compression driver. That sound is then sent up a tube which is connected to your mouth. Your mouth acts as a resonant chamber, so changing the shape of your mouth changes the way the sound resonates. This sound is picked up by a microphone, which is connected to the PA.

I've never used one, but I have heard they really rattle your teeth You just can't look cool standing there playing with a tube in yer cake hole, making your mouth move. Imagine how nasty that tube will get...yuck...

Sort of, but not really. I'd say it's more of a formant filter in your mouth, but that's sort of backwards since a formant filter models the mouth (that is to say, the effect of the talk box) and not the other way around.

He had both, I'm sure. I don't think you understand how the talk box works.
1) Guitar goes into talk box.
2) Tube shoots sound into mouth.
3) Mouth shoots sound into mic.
4) Mic shoots sound into room.
I believe sometimes the mic is mounted on the tube, but I'm almost positive that that's a rarity.
