Burning smell from amp...

Question:
My friend has a tube amp...and when he plays for 3 hours or so and puts it on standby, a burning smell seems to come out of his amp. I have the same amp as him and my amp doesn't do that. Why is this?
Answer:
what amp is it? is it an actual burning smell? it might be something problematic, but I have noticed with my HRDlx that it has a special aroma when it's been on awhile from everything around the tubes warming up.
Answer:
It's a Traynor, 40 watt, 2 10 inch speaker, 5 tune amp
Answer:
Shine a flashlight in the back, and check for smoke.

Yes, there's something going on but only with that amp. I have a YCV 40 with a single 12" and my son's good friend has the same model as your friend. None of ours is smoking.

Thanks for you help guys, i'll take your advices, for those who gave me some
Answer:
I'd bet it's from something plastic that's too close to one of the tubes. Resistors will sometimes smoke/smell, but when they do that it's usually adios to your amp making sound until the problem is fixed. If something's just getting singed by a hot tube, it will probably continue to work for a while before it breaks.

Answer:
dust on the tubes perhaps? My attenuator smelled terrible when I first started using it, like the apartment was burning down, I took it apart, cleaned off the dust, and voila, it worked with only a mild hot smell.

This would be the classic (at least here in the midwest and other colder areas) "first time for the season that the furnace kicked in" smell. I think this explaination (BillSPrestonEsq's) makes a lot of sense, especially in light of the fact that the amp continues to work.

Answer:
lol that "friend" is me anyway its not that somthing's burning its that theres a wierd smell after awhile. I dont know how to describe the smell lol i guess you might say a burning smell. I dont wanna take my amp apart for fear of messing more things up(unless properly instructed) and dont have enough cash to bring it in for repairs.
