Which pedals?
Question: Hey guys do you know what kinda pedals Hillsong United or like Chris Tomlin uses? Also, is it possible to figure it out by just listening to the songs? Answer: Their sound is derived mostly from their amps. I don't know what each of them uses exactly, but I believe Orange and Vox amps are popular. As for pedals, the Fulltone Fulldrive II seems to be standard with most of them. Delay is also used a lot. I'm also going to remove the song, as it is copyrighted material and as far as I know, can't be posted. Just in case though, i've saved it and can repost it if I find it is legal. If not, i'll delete it in a few days. Answer: The lead guitarist uses a Roland Guitar Synth processor, which can mimick most violins, cellos, flutes, and other band/orchestra instruments very well. BUT...EX-PENS-IVE! Answer: hey there m8 as far as pedals go in united, bassically, i guess the one pedal that u can count on every guitarist using is a ts9. then its sparkle drives, FD2, expandora, ts808. u gotta remember that they combine alot o there od's, for eg for a song like tell the world theyd use like a ts9 with a ts808 or watever, every guitarist is different. delay is also used quite a bit, ur dd-5, echo park, echo pro stuff like that. a temolo here n there, chorus (voodoo lab analog, uni-V), crybaby wah ps and if u find anyone that can tell wat pedals are being used just by hearing a song pls tell me!!! but u can have some idea of wat effect would sound cool for particular songs Hope this helps! Answer: Wow.... so many different pedals.... yet I don't anything about pedals and distortions... Well right now, I only have 2 pedals... Boss DS-1 and Darelectro Black Coffee Metal Distortion. Personally I can mimic United guys a bit with these 2... but I dunno for sure. People tell me these are relaly crappy, but for some reason I find them sounding pretty good. What do you guys think? Answer: I know Nigel Hendroff's setup, he has played with United and he is currently playing with the Hillsong church team. Amps: Mesa Nomad 55 (head) into a 2x12 Fender CAB, Vox AC30 Pedal Board: Ernie Ball Volume Pedal, Uni-Vibe, DD5-Delay w/tap tempo, Voodoo Lab Analog Chorus, Voodoo Lab Tremolo, Fulltone Fulldrive 2, Boss DM2-Delay, TS-9 Tubescreamer, TU-2 Boss Tuner & Crybaby Wah.... His setup is sweet!!! I don't usually like steve vai's tone. as sacreligeous as it may be to admit that. Answer: Hmm... do you guys know if it's possible to just get a Multi Effects and use that for most of the Hillsong songs? It's very possible You don't have to sound exactly like Hillsongs to play their music. Find sounds YOU like and use those when playing Hillsongs. Even if you really wanted to sound just like them, with a good multi-effect unit, you should be able to get close enough sounding if you play with it a lot. Answer: Looking for a cheap multi FX? Behringer has a new one out, the V-Amp floor unit. Money not an issue? GET THE BOSS GT-8! Here's my advice...take it for what it's worth. Your #1 concerns with getting a good sound should be a good guitar and a good amp. "Good" can mean whatever you want it to but, in general, a good sound should be clean (even distortion can be clean) and well rounded in tone; meaning, you have enough highs, mids and lows to adjust for whatever sound you're trying to get...and THEN you add your effects. Like a good meal, a little salt and pepper and spices/sauces will enhance a good steak or fish or whatever but it won't save a burned, tough piece of meat. Same with effects; they'll enhance and compliment an already good raw tone but won't do a thing for a poor sounding guitar and amp. Multi-effects...I stay away from them because I like the individual tweaking I can do to random pedals (this from a guy who uses a Line 6 amp in church) but there are good multi units out there IF you're willing to spend the cash (Boss GT and such) on a good one and spend LOTS OF TIME adjusting it to suit your needs and, very importantly, the needs of the room you're playing in. Example: you may like a lot of reverb but your church building may not. Be aware of that. You may like chorus and up close to the amp, it sounds cool but far away where other people are actually listening to you, it could sound washed out and mushy. I think it's cool that you're inspired by what you hear from the Hillsongs band and want to emulate them. That's how many of us learned what we know; by copying others who have something that sounds good to us. But, just be aware that the sound that you hear on a recording has had some 'adjustments' made to it, more than likely, and quite possibly has been cleaned-up or even re-recorded in a studio and that can make it difficult for us to recreate live AND, as someone else said, in your search for effects and tones you may find a sound that works better for you in your setting than what you hear on the Hillsongs tunes. The DS-1 was my first effect pedal back in 1980. It was pretty awful sounding back then, pretty awful sounding today BUT there's folks out there who will mod them or sell kits to have them modded and, allegedly, it turns the DS-1 (and other lacklustre pedals) to things of beauty. www.indyguitarist.com is one such place. I have yet to order one of Brian's mod kits (I NEED TO) but he seems like a good guy. But like I was saying earlier (and looking at the gear list that paulag listed below for the Hillsongs guitarist. it's confirmed), great sound starts with a good amp and a good guitar. Good technique helps, too. Answer: Originally Posted by SoapbarII Money not an issue? GET THE BOSS GT-8! or a PODxt Live! or a Vox Valvetronix floorboard. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
