First amp, small budget: Ashdown?

Question:
Hey guys, looking for my first amp and I have a limited budget (about $400 Australian Dollars, don't know how much that'd be in US Dollars).
My friend and I are starting a band, and we have yet to find a drummer, but when we do I don't want something that'll get drowned out so I'm looking for more than 50 watts. I was naturally thinking the bigger, the better, as I don't want just a practice amp.
There's a 100watt Ashdown amp (the Ashdown Five Fifteen Combo, 1 x 15" speaker) for my price range that I was looking at. Does this sound good to y'all, or would I be wasting my money?
What would you guys recommend?
Thanks!
-Brad.
Answer:
Are you a bass player or guitar player?
Answer:
give us the link to the ashdown amp so we can have an idea of how much it is in US dollars.
Answer:
That Ashdown Five Fifteen looks nice...Ashdown has been building up their reputation...i don't have any personal experience with them though.

Shoulda stated that, sorry. I play the bass. The Five Fifteen is a bass amp, and the place I'd be buying it from doesn't have a listing of it as they....uh...they just don't. I googled it and came up with this, which shows its specs:

They're asking AUD$445, I reckon I could them down to $400-420, but just to be safe I did the conversion at $430.
AUD$430 = USD$325
Or thereabouts. As stated on http://www.xe.com/ucc/. You also have to take into account overseas shipping from whereever (I'm assuming the US) so things like that down here are always a bit more expensive than in America, from what I've heard.
Thanks!

If you'll note, it says it's 100watt some places, but only 65watt in other parts of the same article. I'm not techy enough to understand why, but I'm sure there's an explanation. Do you reckon that means it's really only 65watt? And would that not be worth it in that case?
Answer:
you'd be shipping from the UK. I'm surprised there's not an AU store that sells them too.
The Ashdown site says it's 100W, so that's the power rating I'd go with. Here's a US listing at $240USD

This AU store has it for $599AUD.

that doesn't sound like a great price but it may be the result of having to ship the thing halfway 'round the world.
Answer:
For bass you'll definitely want 100 watts or more. Wattage doesnt go nearly as far with bass as it does with guitar.
I dont know how things are Down Under . . . but assuming they're not that far removed from here, I'd suggest, within that price range, you look for something used. SWR makes a great combo called the Workingman's 15. Carvin's bass amps look excellent, I dont know how you'd find there stuff there . . . I dislike the sound of Peavey bass amps, but they are inexpensive and good quallity.
Definitely look for a combo, rather than stack . . . it will be less expensive, and easier to carry around. 1x15 or 2x10, both with a horn. And again, you'll definitely want 100 watts or more.
When you have more of a budget, especially if you get/stay serious about the bass, eventually you'll want to loook for a stack: 300 watts or more, 4x10 + 1x18. And then you'll still have a nice combo to use for rehearsals, practice, and smaller gigs.

Hi Honey
....I think we should turn left!
Need to call Billy Hyde on Saturday morning methinks. And get this show on the road! If they don't have the amps mentioned here, they might be able to order them.

I was in a band that toured in High School and bought an Ashdown 4x10 cab (leather covering--not the carpet-type) that I don't recall the name of. That was 7 years ago and I bought it used from a pro jazz player. I played mostly Indie stuff: Jets to Brazil, the Promise Ring, the Get Up Kids, etc.
It was fantastic and could take anything I threw at it. Highly recommended!

I use a higher end Ashdown model at school, and it sounds pretty darn good. If you're just starting out, I think it'd be anice choice of beginning amp, and 100W should get you by. 50W seems underpowered to me, playing in a rock band.
And to the last poster...
Jets to Brazil = <3.

I feel the same way.
