Changing tubes w/o killing oneself???
Question: Hi. I was wondering if you could help me transfer my Mesa tubes that are in my Carvin MTS3200 into my Peavey JSX Joe Satriani head. I'm capable of transferring the tubes all I need is some advice on the procedures. Thanks for your help! Matthew. Answer: If you want to avoid killing yourself, just make sure you DON'T poke any tools up into the tube sockets. But that's easy enough because (I think) only a crazy person would do that, and even then you'd have to do it just right in order to do it just wrong, if you know what I mean. Now really.... First you have to know what type of tube goes where in each amp. The preamp tubes in each amp are likely to be 12AX7. Basically, you carefully remove (pull, gently wiggle) them from the tube socket of one amp and carefully (push, gently wiggle) install them on the correct tube sockets from the other amp. If your two amps have the same type of power tubes (I haven't looked it up, but you can), you can basically do the same procedure - remove and insert. I've always found it helpful to place the amp so that I can see the tube sockets (instead of having to feel for them). It makes the job go quicker. With most tubes, there's only 1 way the tube will fit easily (DON'T force things! If you break off a metal pin in one of the tube sockets, that's a real pain for you and some easy cash for a repair tech) into the socket. Nate Nate Answer: and, always, AWLAYS! unplug the amp. worried about caps? let it sit unplugged a couple days, the NORMALLY works. (only works for electrolytic caps) Answer: changing tubes is usually easy and painless..."remove tube, insert new tube"...now biasing can be a whole different story and varies from amp to amp. Answer: When I change out my tubes, I unplug the amp (most important)... then I turn the amp on to cycle out any electricity that might still be around... and then pull the tubes, plug the new ones in, turn on the amp, test it, and off I go.
