Must...save...money!

Question:
OK I found a Behringer halfstack, 120 watt head (i think, i figured 2x60 equals 120) but it sounds great and its loud enough for me. Its going for $400 right now. Is this the best deal i'm most likely to find? Or could I save more money and get the same thing for cheaper (doesnt matter what brand, just same specs, loud and clean).
Answer:
i would buy a combo if i were you. what kind of music are you gona play.
Answer:
First, ask yourself why you want a halfstack? Do you really need that big and powerful of an amp? Or do you want it just because it's big and looks cool? My recommendation is that unless you have a true need for one (good sized gigs with no PA for example) that you go with a combo. Besides that, in your price range, you will be paying for wattage, not tone. In the end, getting a combo will net you a much better tone, and you can more then likely get more then enough volume for whatever you need.
Answer:
for $400 you could get a decent tube combo, or a tube head and have some money left over to save towards a cab.
The Behringer that you're thinking of will sound decent, and be fairly versatile...and be loud...
it really comes down to this, like P-Man said, what kind of situations are you looking at playing in? I recently hooked up my HRDlx to my Mesa 4x12 in my bedroom...I'll just say it was a silly idea and i'll never seriously do it again (though I might jokingly).
Answer:
piano man is right. why get a huge stack. its really heavy to carry around. its probly extremely load. while if you get a combo its not nearly as heavy or load. i think you only need a halfstack if your in a touring band situation. i just bought a peavey valveking tube amp from musiciansfriend for 350 bucks with a unlimited amout of warrenty for 40 dollars(which im getting sunday). i would check out tube combo amps if i were you.
Answer:
I'll be playing in a 1500 seat theatre (with balcony).
Plus my youth group will be moving wednesday night service to the gym and I wanted something for that that would be loud enough without loss of tone or those annoying vibrations and cutting out when you start to approach high levels on your amp.
But I will look into the big tube amps...because I do need a big'un.
Answer:
I already knew some about tube amps and solid states in the range of $400...but after a quick review of the many types and brands on musiciansfriend.com (and yes Ive played some at my local store) I must say that these arent going to suffice. I play rock music...progressive rock. Pillar, TFK, Falling Up, Disciple...that is our style (I stick closer to TFK/Disciple). I dont think those amps are going to help me...I'd be wasting $400...the same $400 I could have spent on exactly what I needed.
And I'm no pro, I dont need top of the line. Maybe in a year or two I'll decide I want a better head and invest in a Carvin or Mesa or whatever I think is best for me.
That being said, is it a good deal among HALFSTACKS? Or should I spend $100 more to get something like a Crate or Randall or Line 6? (just so you know, I've never liked Line 6 effects, never played their amps though)
Answer:
it's a decent deal for a halfstack, but it's not a great deal for a Behringer. You're only saving about $30 from the actual price. For a new product that's a decent price though.
I'm sorry about you having to play in a gymnasium. I hope you guys have a plan to reduce reverbation by isolating the service area. Gyms are tough places to run sound in because they echo like the Grand Canyon. Are you going to be unmic'd in both situations? that'd not going to help much with sound dispersion...you may end up killing people in the "line of sight" of your speakers and people to the sides will barely be able to hear it.
it might be worth it to spend a little extra and get a Randall since you're really into that hard rock style...that being said...please never call any of those bands "progressive rock" again...because they aren't.
Answer:
here's something to look at...buy a good head and make your own cab...carvin's GS12-75-16's are on sale for $20 each...many ppl swear by them, and for $20 bucks you can't really miss.
Answer:
Now THAT's an idea. With some wiring and carpentry knowledge, you could make your own cab.
Answer:
hey, i've got nothing to do...i could draw up wiring diagrams and blueprints...

If you do, please post em. 2*12 @ 120 watts maybe? or 4*10 maybe?
Answer:
I'm thinking that if you're playing in a gym, you should be miked. Thats too big of a space for an amp to be going itself.
Answer:
i'll see what i can do...will work on it later tonight.
