OD Through SS Amp

Question:
Alrighty, I have a question. I'm looking into the J&H OD/DS pedal or the TS-9. I'm looking for that smooth OD sound, so it has to be boosted but not crunchy. Will that sound alright through a solid state amp? I also have a compressor, so that should help as well. Right now, my amp doesn't have that kind of thick, OD sound.
Note: I didn't no exactly where to put this thread, so I put it here.
Answer:
If you are using your pedal as a boost, and not as an overdrive, then it will probably just have the same effects as turning up the gain on your amp. It won't make your amp have "smoother" distortion. ine real issue is that you don't have a tube amp. I have no experience with your amp, so I dunno what patches would be best for what you're looking for.
Answer:
No, I'm going to try and use the OD pedal as an OD.. But will it not have that smooth OD sound like it would with a tube amp?

OD pedals, anymore, are designed as standalone pedals. You could run a pedal straight into a PA if you really wanted to (you'd probably at least want a DI box or something to roll off the high frequencies)).
Plus, your amps is already a modeling amp, so this should be a nonissue.
Answer:
If you have a SS, I'd prolly go with the J&H. Tubescreamers sound best with coupled with a tube amp so you might be a little disappointed if the sound doesn't come out to be the way you'd imagine. The J&H would give also give you a lot more different types of OD and distortion to keep you happy.
The TS-9 has tons of mids and would make the smooth sound you're looking for. But you might want to try these pedals out at a local store. If you do get the TS-9, get it modded! It will sound soo much better. Some popular modders: Analogman, Keeley, Indyguitarist. I have the Keeley plus mod and it is absolutely wonderful. This particular mod uses the same chip as SRV's pedal, but is modded to be more Hi-Fi rather than vintage sounding...result is very clear frequencies with more transparency. GOod luck!
Answer:
Yeah, If I get the TS-9, it would definitly be modded by Robert Keeley.
Carlos Santana uses a TS-9 through is tube amps and gets a wonderful tone. Could I get that sort of tone with a SS amp + the TS-9 (or JH)?

Answer:
No doubt. I looked at his gear, on his site, and wow. His wah pedal is almost destroyed, but he still uses it.
Answer:
Santana uses Dumble and Mesa amps I believe. Both have very specific tonalities and I can guarantee that you can't get that sound on a lower end modeling amp (believe me, i've tried on my churches Line6 Spider). You might be able to get something relatively close though. It will take plenty of fiddling though.
Answer:
where did you find santana's gear page?
Answer:
Santana.com
Then put your mouse over "players", then a bar will pop up and on the right of the bar will be "musicians corner".
It has his stuff there.
PianoMan: Yeah, I understand he has some awesome amps, but I'm not trying to totally replicate his tone, but to get a tone that is in the same category.
Answer:
The tubescreamer (TS808, specifically) was made really famous as a boost pedal by Stevie Ray Vaughan. OD pedals are very often used as boost pedals to overdrive clean tube amps. The distorted tone of the pedal doesn't really shine through. Santana might only use his TS9 as a boost. You probably want to find the Mesa-like patch on your amp (something that gives a high gain Mesa tone), lower the gain, and use your neck pickup. Santana's tone is definitely hard driven neck pickup. Coupling it with a tubescreamer may or may not help it along, I'm not really sure.
Answer:
I like using the Marshall "Plexi" amp setting on my Line6 and then setting the J side at about 11 o'clock. This usually nets me some smooth overdrive.
