Welcome to www.thanktoday.com !!!

I need metal and hardcore sounds!

Question:
What dirt pedals would you say would work? I like old Metallica-like sounds. I'm thinking about getting this amp that apparently does Led Zep style tones at it's heaviest, and would like something that can give me more over-the-top distortion.
Those of you with Classics, Hot Rods, or similar medium-gain amps, have you ever tried putting a clean boost to your amp, and giving it a bit of a more brutal distortion?
Answer:
On a side note, I once ran my 20dB boost wah pedal through a Fender Champ, and that distortion started to become pretty heavy. I'd say it'd do a pretty decent punk sound.
How much gain difference is there between AC/DC and Metallica, anyways? Could I just use a boost pedal through an amp thwat gives moderately heavy distortion to give me the over-the-top sound?
Answer:
you might be able to boost it.
i think you could get pretty heavy with a ProCo rat or a good DS-1 (Steve Vai uses modded DS-1s as i recall).
i had the clean channel on my HRDlx up to 8 once (posted the sound clip in the "Gibson v. Epiphone" thread. It sounded pretty heavy. it would've been cool to run the Hyde side of my J&H through it to see how nasty it would've been.
Answer:
I would call it 'heavy' as much as I'd call it 'thick'.
Yeah, I was thinking of using a boost pedal or EQ pedal with it. I like the Rat, but I'd rather get all my distortion straight from the amp.
So what's the difference (if any) of using an EQ pedal to boost, rather then a boost pedal (aside from the obvious additional tone-shaping power of EQ's). Would an EQ give enough boost?
(happy 2000 posts )
Answer:
whoa...thanks on 2K...didn't know i was already there.
the difference is that most EQs give you 12-15db of boost, and each frequency (even if you flatten your EQ) will probably be a little affected.
with a clean boost you can get upwards of 35db of clean boost (www.tonefactor.com look for the catalinbread super chile picoso) and it's supposed to be ultra transparent.
whether or not an EQ will give you enough boost is going to vary according to how much boost you want

I just kinda passed on by 6,000 myself, recently without noticing.

Cool, thanks for the link. I could use the EQ as just a general EQ for my tone, but I guess if I want a boost, perhaps I should probably get something made specifically to boost.
Answer:
What do you think of using the boost, and just keeping it on while I'm playing all the time, as an overall boost, then adjusting the amp gain as necessary?
Answer:
I'm sure you've already thought of this, but higher gain will yeild a much higher noise level(in referance to bad noise of course ) . I've found this to be particularly true w/ my DE fish and chips, where as a clean boost tends to add less noise.
With my amp cranked to 11 I can get some seriously heavy tones(marginaly sub-metallica), but with my EQ set to 15db boost in the frown position the distortion gets down right ridiculus...of course I can't come within 15 feet of my amp w/o it singing like Maria Cary(feedback)
I hope that helps some.
Answer:
I personaly don't like the tone of my classic thirty if it's cranked on a clean channel.
Answer:
I'm also looking at other preamps that give a clean boost, but not necessarily designed for guitar. Just a plain old preamp for a boost before going into the amp. Since these are designed to give unaffected boosts, will these work on the same performance level of a clean boost stomp box, or do guitar boosts work better for guitars?
Answer:
I spent $650 on my POD PRO for the "Insane" distortion alone. I heard it on a 4x12 and it was incredible! Nothing on a stock amp (Mesa Boogie comes close, but oh so far) sounds like it.
Answer:
Could someone please give me a suggestion for a good clean boost pedal? I've been thinking about looking into it as well myself.
