Help with multi effects...
Question: Accepting your wisdom and advice on the most versatile multi effects board (pref.under $400). I have just recently made the switch to playing more electric guitar from my acoustic playing and I'm looking for a board to tool around with. Much of my music is influenced by U2, the Cure, R.E.M., and recently by Delirous, David Crowder, the United band. I don't look to replicate their sounds exactly as I know several effects and a high budget would be required. Most of playing will be in church for Sunday worship and then for youth/college worship. So versatility is essential. Have an old DOD Tec-8 (which is kinda junky) which is geared for too much metal or hard edge. Any opinions would be appreciated! God Bless Answer: There are loads of good multieffects around.. i suggest -Pod xt Live -Boss Gt8 -Zoom GFX8 These are too me very good multieffects but if you have more $$.. i suggest go for stomboxes.. Answer: Thanks for the input. Anyone with ideas as to the better of these... ...Boss ME-50, GT-5 or GT-6? Thanks again. Answer: the GT-6 is the best of those three. GT-5 has a couple of advantages in that it has seperate compressor and dedicated effects loop. These things are available in the GT-8 again. GT-8 allows two amp models at once which is cool. Line-6 Vetta stuff can do this, but the Boss has more effects from what I can see. I just sold my GT-6 and bought a valve amp and stomp boxes. God Bless Take a look into Vox Valvetronix stuff (Tonelab is the floor version). Focuses more on amp modeling than 'effects', but the Valvetronix stuff does a fantastic job at it. Answer: Hi Forresal, My style is very similar to yours (especially the U2 influence). What amp do you have? And what guitar? That could help a lot in figuring out what multi-effect unit would work best for you. A $400 effects unit could sound like a crappy $50 if you're playing through a 15 watt solid state practice amp (for example). -Nick Answer: The wonderful thing about ebay is you can buy stuff, try it, and then sell it on if it's not exactly what you're after...... at least thats what I tell my wife!!!! I have a DOD G7 and a zoom 505. the DOD will be moving to to fresher pastures before too long I reckon......... Only Alive, I play a Fender stand. strat. Bear with me 'cause I'm not too technically saavy. Generally our church is set up to plug the instruments (excpt bass) through the PA. Occasionally I play through a fender amp a friend loaned me. I'm not sure of the exact specs of the amp, but it sure isn't a 15w practice (the thing is way to hefty to carry and I live in NYC so its also not very convenient to lug through the subways with my other gear). I know that Boss makes some good quality stuff for the $ and I'm sort of leaning toward a used Gt-5. I'm just worried about picking up something and having great for say metal but crap for anyother genre. I know I'm asking a bit much! Thanks again! forresal The GT-6 has some very good clean sounds - the JC120 sounds are great - and one of the patches is an excellent imitation of a fender twin. When I had mine I ran it into the PA using two Behringer Ultra-G DI boxes and it sounded grand. Just listened to some samples from the Boss website...not bad. I don't often change sounds very much during songs and I don't mind tweaking settings/patches so ease of live use shouldn't be a problem for me. Do find the GT-6 pretty versatile? Just reading about the Korg Pandora series....any comments? since I don't often change sounds mid-song, the live issue won't present a problem...plus be easy to transport around the city. Never tried the ME-50, so I can't comment. I found the GT-6 ok to use, but I have sold it and bought a valve amp and stomp boxes. Where the GT-6 really scored for me was that it helped greatly to define my sound. I ended up using about three main patches and some variations of these. With all the choice in the GT-6 you get the chance to try stuff and see what sorts of effects you like and don't like. Never really like the distortions on the korg stuff, but that is personal. If I was going for korg I would get the Vox Tonelab SE. John Answer: The Digitech GNX2 is a good unit, nice sounding effects, it has amp, cab, and distortion pedal modeling, etc, etc., in an all metal enclosure. They are being closed out as low as $199. to make way for the "next generation" Digitechs. I have one and like it - I don't use the amp/cab modeling, since I use an amp, but I have messed with the distortion pedal models and I think they sound pretty good - very much like...well...distortion pedals sound. Great bang for the buck at 199. Answer: Originally Posted by forresal Thanks John. I like the GT 6 too. Do you know anything of the ME-50? Just listened to some samples from the Boss website...not bad. ... I have a Boss ME-50; It is a a very good multi-effects unit if all you're wanting is to emulate pedals. It doesn't do any sort of Amp emulation at all (which is where the GT series comes in). The ME-50 basically is most of the Boss pedals (and some other classics like the Tube Screamer and Rat) put all together in one unit. My favourite thing about it was that you interact with it the same way as you would with a series of seperate pedals, each with their own controls, and then having the luxury of saving that chain of pedals into a patch for later use. It is a lot more intuitive than some other units that use an electronic menuing system. I am probably going to sell my ME-50 soon... I have decided to go down the route of individual stomp-boxes, as I now know the pedals I want for the sounds that I'm after. That, and I've got the cash at the moment to buy some high-end pedals such as the V-Stack Tweedy and ToneBone Hot British, and have achieved a better overall sound.
