Would it be better to save up for a POD XT or whatever,
Or buy seperate stomp boxes?

All I really would like, would be some distortion, possibly chorus, and a bit more.

I started off with the multi-effects route with my guitar (not bass), and worked out exactly what style pedals I was wanting. I am currently in the process of buying (and evaluating) single pedals and so far have achieved a much better sound.
Generally speaking; if you play a lot of different and varying styles of music a multi-effect unit will be better... it's the swiss army knife approach. It can do everything, but is the master of nothing. If you want the "best" sound, then single effects pedals are the way to go imho.
The most important thing I found was to buy a good amp... it's the foundation of your sound.
