The Million Dollar Question

Question:
I know this has to have been asked a billion times but i'm just now seeing this part of the forums for the first time and am too tired to dig... i need a good versatile Amp, one that will handel anything from smooth jazzier tones all the way to screamo and hardcore... i use a lot of pedals, firm believer that if you cant find the right sound from your hardware, work your butt off for cash and buy more hardware, a minimalist by no means... I've been told a Johnson but i've never heard of them... and i'm not going to buy a fender, i am Anti-Fender (long story, nothing against the amps just the guitars, long story)... Can anybody help?
Answer:
hmmm...good luck...PODxt?
That being said, I bet you could get what you want from a Fender Twin Reverb + pedals...hehehe.
Answer:
What's your budget? It's gonna be hard to find an amp that does it all because generally amps tend to speciallize, not many do everything excellently. Not to say you can't find one that will do everything well, just probably not the best at everything.
Answer:
if you already have pedals dont buy one of those amps with effects in them. go for a nice tube amp and you will have the perfect set up. im looking at a peavy classic 50 tube combo w/ 4x10's i think its prriced around 600-700. i havent played on one yet, but ive heard lots of good things about them. if you have the money check out mesa boogie or Vox, i dont know if vox is any good for harder music though.
Answer:
Try the engl screamer. Or thunder if your budget dont manage. Its a 4 channel all tube amp with cristal clear clean to death metal distortion. Its 900 euros here in europe but Idont know about over in the USA
Answer:
Would a PA System work better? like a good sound board and a couple speakers and a subwoofer, that would take care of the whole band then...

well at least not directly through...you need to pre-amp your signal before it hits that PA or it's going to sound off.
Answer:
if youve got the money for a PA system youve got the money for a heck of a good valve amp. And the valve amp would be better

I need a ton of versatility in my rig too. I play in my school jazz big band, a jazz combo thing, a alternative/hardcore band, an acoustic folk band, and have my own solo project, so lots of versatility is important. What I've found is just the best solution is to get a nice tube amp that has gobs of gain on tap when you need it. It'll only sound *ideal* for a couple musical styles, but it'll sound pretty darn good for the rest, as long as you got your right techniques down. An EQ pedal is helpful for this also. My soon-to-be-new-amp is pretty good at this. (should i reveal the secret? )

Yes, puuleeeeeeeeze!
Answer:
Well, I'm waiting until I actually get it, then I can tell everyone all about it.
suspense! suspense!
I was supposed to get it last Friday, but I had a sudden emergency and couldn't get it. (it's rather funny actually, someone called police, and said there was a kid with a gun at our school, the school was locked down for 3 hours, then they find out the call was a hoax. heh.)
Answer:
see the thing is, our band has a bank account, and if i buy an amp, i'm gonna have to settle for something cheap, our bassist blew his amp out trying to add something that would supposedly have made his sound better, too bad he doesn't know how to read a wiring diagram... and our other guitarist has an amp that blows mine away... plus we don't have an amp for the mic... so the band using it's funds to buy a (not top of the line) PA system makse the most sense... and the most people we will be playing for, for a while at least, is maybe 200... (the local scene sucks, nobody here gets into local music, and not a lot of venues)... so when you say a pre-amp what exactly am i looking at, need one for both guitars...

Why do you need a top of the line PA system? Not many bands need to own one for long periods of time, as most clubs, churches, or whatever venue you play will have it's own system. You'd only need one for practice or for gigs you put on yourself.
EDIT: I just realized you said not top of the line. Either way, my statement still stands. What do you need a full PA for? Why not just buy a little amp for a mic? Doesn't have to sound great as long as you guys can use it for practice.

Answer:
okay, so it's been established, in 9 or so different threads that tube amps are best... i need a good NON-FENDER tube amp... let me emphasize this more... NON-FENDER...
