i don't know if you have craigslist in your area but i'd definitely check it out www.craigslist.org it's located in a bunch of major cities so if you live in/near a big city it would be worth it, as there can be some great deals because people need instant cash for rent or whatever.
here's the thing...be willing to buy used gear. I've heard of Fender Hot Rod Devilles for selling under $500 occasionally, and there's often older amps (Musicman, Ampeg...) that sell for pretty cheap because of their age.

yeh, i would like to get used, cause it can be cheaper by a good deal.

There are tons of used Fender Hot Rod DeVille 2x12's out there, I think they usually go for under 500. Its also a great amp for what I (old guy) would call classic/roots rock/blues/pop etc. If you want mega-distorto tones, you should probably look elsewhere.
Answer:
The Traynor YCV80 212 sells for that much. Check Harmony Central, local listings, musician's sites that have gear ads, and of course, ebay. Don't expect to find anything quality new for that price though. Used gear rocks.

Or get a super awesome distortion pedal to compensate. Hehe. Yeah, I think I'm leaning towards getting a Fender tube amp.

Edit: Never mind, I meant Hot Rod DeVille 4x10. I'm sleepy.

Used gear rocks. yeh, i've been thinking about it, and i've decided i want to increase my budget. i think @ the end of the summer (which will hopefully mean lots of extra hours for @ work), i'm going to set aside $800 or so, and buy a really nice tube amp, not something i would ever have to upgrade from. something i could keep for the rest of my life and be satisfied with.
