20 watt tube head with 2x12 cab?
Question: Would a 20 watt tube head with a 2x12 cab be loud enough to play with a band at a gig? Miced or unmiced? Answer: Originally Posted by smashing guitar Would a 20 watt tube head with a 2x12 cab be loud enough to play with a band at a gig? Miced or unmiced? Miced, anything should be loud enough for a good (given that the quality of the mic, PA, etc... are good). Unmiced, I would think that this amp could carry its own in a gig... especially pushing 2x12". Part of this may depend on how much headroom you need... Will you need to be playing a lot of cleans at a very loud level? For me, 20w would be a comfortable number... And powerwise, 20w isn't very far behind a 30w amp (you have a classic 30, don't you?), and, I would think that better speakers would make up for much of the loss. The main thing to keep in mind with a smaller tube amp is headroom. That amp looks great... I know I'd rather get something with at least another channel... maybe another (footswitchable) gain stage... Thats just me though... a good distortion pedal in front might do great as well. Answer: Well I don't realy need head room. And as far as another channel, I just use the dirt chanel and when I need a clean tone, I use a volume pedal pused down enough to eliminate most the gain. It drops the volume alittle bit, but I think it's kinda cool. I learned that from Brooks, from Sullivan. I would need it to play at like parties, aswell as clubs (with mics) I'm mainly considering getting the head and cab for these reasons: *Lower watts mean crankage (right?) *I need a better tone *It looks cool (can that even count as a reason?) And thanx for the input. Answer: Originally Posted by smashing guitar Well I don't realy need head room. (the EL84s instead of the 12AX7s). You still might want to buy an attenuator to be able to overdrive the poweramp at even lower volumes. Originally Posted by smashing guitar *I need a better tone Ok. Once you get into tube amps like this, tone seems to become preference. Find something you like and go with it... Try it out first if you can... or even finding recordings can give you an idea of the sound. Originally Posted by smashing guitar *It looks cool (can that even count as a reason?) Sure. Answer: Looks are definately important to me, but It's gotta sound awesome 1st. Answer: Actualy, I think I'm gonna stick with combos. *coughcoughorangecough* Answer: Actually though, those Soldano heads are incredible. Seeing as I haven't been at all impressed with Orange's amps, I would personally stick with the Soldano. But, it's your call. Answer: Well that's just the problem. I might be able to try out the Orange amps. But definatly won't be able to play Soldano amps, to see what I like best. Copyright © 2007 - 2008 www.thanktoday.com
