It's entirely possible to match them up. Doing so might kind of compromise the tone of how they should sound (i.e., running chorus before distortion, etc.), but it can never hurt to experiment.
I used to use a Korg AX1500G. After I started figuring out which effects were which, which ones were most useful, if and why they either did or didn't sound good, etc., I started supplementing the pedal with a Boss SD-1 and eventually an Ibanez TS-9 simply because the overdrive effects weren't very good. Adding both of those pedals in there really made a difference, but eventually made me realize just how mediocre nearly everything else with the pedal truly was.
