custom amp

Question:
hey what do you think of mkaing your own amps and not buying name brand i like it cuase you can customize it and stuff and pic exactlly what you wnat and it;s cheaper.ive been thinking of doing it for awhile but jsut ahve to get the money.
Answer:
Can you ellaborate on what you mean by "custom?" Like an all tube point-to-point wired amp or just throwing some solid state parts together? They have kits for tube stuff and they are more expensive than production type amps.
Answer:
Buying and older amp and tweaking it up to your specs is a fun way to go . I wouldn't mess with anything unless you really understand what is happening "Under the Hood". There are voltages in these babies that WILL KILL YOU so keep that in mind.
I bought an older amp (Peavey Ultra 60 head) and did just that. I however, am an Electrical Engineer with specialties in Analog, RF, and Microwave . I took the schematics, performed analyses, and knew what would happen before picking up a soldering iron . I suggest you do the same.
There are many websites with good advice to offer. I suggest knowing every aspect of what you are doing before making any kind of investment in time or money. If there is an amp that you can get that has the tones you want, you may be better off just getting it and saving yourself a ton of headaches and long frustrating nights with no amp and alot of work yet to do before you have one . If you know what you are doing, however, go for it .
Peace, and BE CAREFUL!!!

John

Dude - I wish I studied that stuff! Totally agree with the 'know what you're doing before you do it' advice... I never do any mod unless others have done it first. But I wish I actually knew what I was doing other than following instructions.
Answer:
I wish I was a mod... This should be in the amps and accesories forum.
