Peavey Heritage VTX

Question:
Possibility of picking up a '79 Heritage cheap. May need a new speaker but if the price is right, that isn't a big deal.
Anyone have any input on this amp?
It is SS pre- and tube power, I think? It is heavy, but it's mostly for home use. Would I need an attenuator for it? Thanks in advance for any help.
Answer:
you could actually effectively use an attenuator on that.

Thanks --any other input on the amp? Things to look for? If it's in decent shape, sounds good and I can get it for $60 - 70, seems like I can't go wrong??

i don't really know much about this amp. i'm kinda waiting for a mod to send this over to my forum (amps and accessories) and seeing what kind of responses come up over there.
are you going to get the opportunity to play test the amp?

Yeah, I'll run up to Denver on Sat and take my guitar.
Am I in the wrong place for this discussion? I'm pretty much a noooobie!
I appreciate the input.

so i read through the harmony-central reviews and looked at some pics on ebay. it really doesn't look like a bad amp. it's from what i tend to think of as the "overlooked" era of Peavey amplifiers, when Peavey was making alot of decent but quickly forgotten amplifiers.

amp was sold -- so back to my search.
I'm thinking I'll keep looking for a Peavey Classic 30 or preferrably a 50 210. Probablymore amp than I need.
Thanks much for your input.

actually i was under the impression that the wattage on the heritage was higher than either of those.

Yeah, you're right about that. Only came across this one as I was looking for the Classic. It was such a steal (that's why someone else beat me to it!)
For $300 - $400 I think I can find a nice Classic 30 or 50. What do you think of that? Are there better choices to look for in that range? Even 30 watts tube is more than I usually will need -- I'll get an attenuator if I need one. I'm just thinking good reliable tone, resonably portable, not an arm and a leg, resale value if I decide it's not what I want/need. I've been reading through tons of relevant posts. I jump to Harmony Central and check out reviews, etc. I am open to input and really appreciate all the good stuff I'm gaining here.

what kind of sound are you looking for? I bought my Fender Hot Rod Deluxe for just over $400 (I think it was like $406). The price range and quality are about the same between the Fender HRs and the Peavey Classics in my opinion, but the HRs have an effects loop, while the Classics have a true master volume and a crunchier overdrive.

good question! I don't have a good answer tho!
I'm mainly an acoustic player (Taylor 810 w/Fishman undersaddle p/u) but have an Am Stand Strat w/orig single coils and a piezo undersaddle -- stereo output). I played on worship band 3 services/week for 16 yrs (used both guitars thru a Carvin mini PA and the Strat with a DigiTech RP200) but have moved and am no longer playing regularly. I want to expand and grow. I like all kinds of sounds so versatility is big for me. I'll occassionally play out, but mostly just for me and the Lord!! Not sure if this helps. Thanks!

hmmm...yeah...you might want to go with something small then. I might consider the Classic 30 to be the upper limit of your search and try to find something even smaller like a Fender Blues Jr.
though personally I'm a fan of very low-wattage tube amps like the Fender Champ (6W) or the Gibson Skylark (also 6W i believe). the one drawback of both of these (and the Blues Jr.) is that they are all single channel amps.
