building a cab

Question:
Well, I'm buying a engl screamer 50 head during the summer, and I need a cab. I've decided to build it myself. I suppose I need a speaker (i'm buying a celestion v12-80 silver series, which is the speaker in the combo version of this amp.) now how thick should the plywood be for the amp. And should I close the back of the cab. Has anyone done this before?
Answer:
1x12? 2x12? 4x12?
I don't know a lot about the actual construction, but Scott Splawn of Splawn Guitars uses 3/4" 13 ply baltic birch plywood I believe, and his cabs sound amazing. I'd say if you want a more open sound with the mids and highs more pronounced, have it open back. If you want a more tighter sound with pronounced bass, have it closed. Or, you could always rig it up so that you could have it open or closed.
If you're getting the same speaker as the combo version, why not just get the combo?
Answer:
I dont want the combo version cos I want to be able to just carry the head around and keep the cab at home. The combo would look bad on top of a 4*12 cab if I ever play on one.

Answer:
Yeah I'll have a cab where i'm playing (church for example)
I just prefer heads they look cool
Answer:
What would a 1*12 closed back cab sound like. Arent 1*12's usually open backed?

Answer to the 2nd question is "no". I have a closed back 1x12' built for me by earcandycabs.com. I would suggest you look at their site and see want kinds of materials they use. Mine has solid pine sides with mahogany front and back. You may want to look at the wood options there. Also, go to avatarspeakers.com for further info. When I had mine built, it was between these two companies. I am very pleased with my Ear Candy cab, despite the name.
